Starting out with security and privacy - is ProtonMail safe or safer than Gmail? Honestly, this is the reason you go with either Gmail or Proton. ProtonMail boasts an impressive reputation for prioritizing privacy and security. It offers end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only you and your recipient can access your emails. Plus, it's headquartered in Switzerland, a country known for its stringent privacy laws.

Gmail on the other hand, is directed at regular users. It's free and very convenient, especially since it integrates with all Google products seemingly. I use it, you use it, and your grandma probably has Gmail, it's just how things are. Inherently, it's not as good at security and privacy as ProtonMail. However, Gmail also provides encryption, but it's not end-to-end by default. Instead, it relies on TLS or transport layer security encryption while your emails are in transit, but has a few "weak points".

Right, ProtonMail offers a clean and user-friendly interface, though it is not as feature-rich or polished as Gmail in some places. ProtonMail Sign Up and ProtonMail Set Up are fairly straightforward processes. If you're a true fan of Gmail's layout, you can replicate that experience on ProtonMail and sort of get the same but with actual privacy. Paid versions provide customization options and more custom folders and labels to keep your inbox organized.

But these are features that come with the free Gmail account, no restrictions - it sucks a bit for ProtonMail to keep them under a paywall. And I probably don't need to expand on Gmail's overall ease of use. It's great. You can customize how your email looks, set different filters and add extra tools - it's truly a future-rich email platform. So, Gmail easily wins in terms of ease of use and versatility.

Moving on to ProtonMail vs Gmail prices… ProtonMail offers both free and paid plans, to start using the free version you just need to create a ProtonMail account. But this plan comes with quite the limitations, offering just 1GB of storage and, more importantly, caping messages to 150 per day. Which isn't really an option if you're running a business. Premium starts from under $5 a month for up to 10 accounts and 15 GB of space.

Again, one major plus of Gmail is that in its basic form, it's completely free. Sure you do get ads, but you also get 15GB of storage space for each of your accounts. You also can get more storage if needed, I personally use the 200GB option for keeping or transferring my media. Lastly, it's worth noting that Gmail doesn't offer anonymous sign-up or payment alternatives like ProtonMail has.

Okay, is Proton Mail better than Gmail? In terms of security, and privacy - YES, absolutely. But Gmail is free and very convenient especially if you're using other readily available Google tools. So if you're good with your data being used for marketing and Gmail still is a great choice, but if you value your privacy, maybe it's time to give ProtonMail a shot…

I figured email was something my family uses every day to connect to all types of services, so it is worth paying for to me. I have been using Proton Mail for years now and have been very happy with it. I like the added security and that it is the focus of the company.

As far as I understand it, Proton Mail is only end to end encrypted if the recipient is using Proton Mail OR if you password protect the email you are sending to a non-Proton Mail recipient. Then you have the problem of letting the recipient know the password to unlock it 🙄 I know, why not send them and email 😂

If you want just an privacy respecting email service and you are willing to pay for that, Tuta is cheaper and offers more. Also I find Tuta's UI a little bit nicer. If you don't want to pay, IMO Gmail is the best option.

Proton is great if you want more than 1 account. I got 10 Mails in one Account for different stuff, its so convinient

I spend $26.42 per mo for gmail with our own domain name, I'm not able to turn off the prodictive text/wording, which makes compsing emails a nightmare. For $317.04 per year it would be nice if I can choose which options I want to use. Is Proton better for us? We have 2 email accounts with gmail. Thanks
