In this one case where I actually have to defend the company.
They didn't have any IP logs to hand to the Swiss government. But the government requested they log the IP for this one account and hand it over.
They still have to abide by the laws of the country they reside in, and if such a legal request is made and they can't successfully contest it they have to abide by it.
They even say on their site that this is the case and that if you're worried about something like this you should use a VPN or access it through TOR.
Only the guy here didn't.

The IP log information is apparently not logged for everyone, but only for the email addresses that the law requires. I guess that no company could stay alive in a country in the long run without following its rules. The only way to not log IPs is to use a technology for which it's impossible to log IPs. To my understanding, Proton mail still is an great way to avoid Google's, Microsoft's and others spying on the email content and still rest assured that the company's target is not selling users' data.

It is not the first time Proton Mail has had to log in IP by governemental orders too. And their reaction has always been, they are doing what we can within the constraint of the law.

The IP are not logged in by default, they are only logged when asked by the Swiss authority.

Clickbait... (Current title: "Your email is no longer private")

Authorities can't decrypt email, the situation was over IP logging, not the privacy of email content.

I mean, the email itself is still private, just not where it's sent from. While an email provider claiming they don't log IPs or browser fingerprints is nice, if you're really concerned about privacy, use Tor to access that service at a minimum.

Gmail is doing OCR on inline and attached images. I was literally able to find a costco reciept by typing in amount

Yeh, this was one of Proton's canary terms. They have been fighting that regulation for a while. They don't log IP addresses for EVERY account, just the ones mandated by legal request (and they still legally have to inform the account holder). Sadly this is becoming an issue in every country a company can host in.

Combo VPN and mail works still and works well. It's sad that the swiss government has moved off of it's privacy focused stance and has started encroaching on these rights.

Proton has been exceptionally transparent throughout the entire situation and has been keeping the community up to date with the events affecting them. 9/10 still recommend if you don't have the skill to properly set up your own email server (or just can't be arsed). Also recommend using it through TOR and/or a proxy system to cover this issue.

I'm not one to complain about clickbait, but this news is distinctly different from the title this video was given. In case they change it, the title I am referring to is "Your email is no longer private"

Clip title kinda clickbait. Don't mind them being FORCED to log IP's when people who want that complete anonymity should/do use VPNs anyway.
The contents of the email is private, the company, a hacker or any government still can't see the contents and that's the most important part.

one thing to mention, the issue of websites fingerprinting you on tor can largely be mitigated by completely disabling javascript. Not 100% sure if that includes screen resolution, but it will mitigate most of those things such as typing analysis.

The internet is getting smaller and smaller, the amount of hoops one has to go about to stay private is insane.

Unless your company's servers are on international waters, companies will always abide to government restrictions 🙄

"You should not use email for any type of secure communication"

Yet the entire healthcare industry is still using fax machines to send sensitive personal information between different business units.

AN UNENCRYPTED ANALOG SIGNAL!!

Question: if i use proton for government / bank websites, does that make me suspicious?

Also they say use a VPN to avoid IP logging but I’m assuming using Proton VPN is null because it’s attached to your account.
