Taking notes: "sentence-based grammar" + "structured repetition" are key ingredients... So, next time someone tells me _not_ to use those in teaching Russian, I'll know what to show them 😎

I'm not fluent in anything but English, but I found that learning nouns first and grammer later was super helpful. You do that in person with the people you are trying to speak to. Making mistakes teaches a lot also. Don't be afraid of mistakes, you're going to make them, haha.

I was a Farsi and Dari linguist in the Airforce. I do not think the DLAB test measures ones ability to learn another language, but it test to see can you learn another language fast. Anybody can learn another language, but the military does not have a lot of time to teach you a new language and have time left for you to go operational in that language.

Classes are also always in a foreign language. There’s no signs with English on it, or posters with English, or door numbers either English. Everything is immersive, meant to make you stop thinking about the default language we speak.

These military guys aren’t learning quickly, just more intensely. The average school student or private student won’t get more than a few hours tuition per week, so naturally they’ll take longer to learn. I wish people would stop being sold the idea that learning languages is the same as buying fast food. It isn’t, you need patience and perseverance.
