I would say the following.

If you are one contract and done.
1.) You just need to be average.
(You are guaranteed to make E-3 at the least by year 3. Helps you stay under the radar.)
2.) Don't do more than is expected of you because if you are good at it you'll be doing those tasks a lot more.
3.) Stay single.
(It will keep your mind focused and that will increase your odds of survival on deployment and through your contract.)
4.) Have an exit strategy.
(Ex. Save your money, look up schools, look up careers, start making a game plan, etc.)
5.) Pack lightly.
(Don't buy too much shit. It makes the move easier.)

If you want to be a lifer.
1.) Get your certifications.
2.) Get your qualifications.
3.) Stay in super good shape.
4.) Learn to network.
5.) Find a mentor.

If you have nothing going for yourself do it . I left my hometown 17 years ago to the Marines I’m 3 years from retirement and I’ll be leaving with a master’s degree for free ( no student debt) a retirement check for the rest of my life and loads of friends and experiences . Yea it sucks sometimes but it’s worth it

My advice: 1) If you have any friends at home named "Susie RC" and/or "Jodi" who say they'll "watch after your girlfriend/boyfriend while you're at boot, break up with your 'girlfriend/boyfriend. 2) Drink water fast. 3) Improve your janitorial skills before your first duty station PCS. 4) To get the USMC experience, go stand in a long line, wait until you get to the head of the line. Then go, find another long line, and stand in, repeat 30 times per day. -- Hope that helps.

1. Choose a specialty that trains you in skills you want to have
2. Do NOT take anyone's word, if it's not written, it's not happening.
3. Give it your all in training, you're LITERALLY being paid to get stronger/faster.
4. Bureaucracy is RAMPANT, if something makes more work for anyone else, they're gonna shirk as much as possible.
TRUST BUT VERIFY
5. Be generous where you can, on post, give rides to randos caught in the rain. Makes good connections.
6. Do NOT use your real name when hooking up with random women.
7. Two is one, one is none.
8. Your buddies can be trusted with your life, not your money or your wife

There's lots more, but these are the ones that come to mind

#1 rule: Don't just join to join, try your BEST to get a good job that will benefit you once you get out. Because at the end of it, when you go through that BS/Favoritism/Politics, that experience is all you have once you leave and need to try to provide for yourself again.

If you go to the military pick a job that you can do outside of the military in the event that you end up leaving the military that way youre not starting over at square one once you hit civilian world

If your going to join, do at least 4 yrs. And if your 18 to 20 yrs old try the marines. Best training and if you apply yourself you'll be amazed at the transformation in yourself. Best decision I ever made.

I was injured multiple times in my service, as an infantry men, I had no idea that I was going to get disability for my injuries until after I got out and someone close to me encouraged me to go to the va. Gave me disability which has allowed me to go to school full time without stressing. I though it was all sacrifice and the gain was serving with some of the best people in the world. I was infantry and it was immensely hard to get employed and I went from living on the floor of my brother apartment to having my own and a bed. If I didn’t have a successful brother I would have been homeless. The VA also has a vocational rehabilitation program for veterans struggling with employment and I am close to finishing. I feel like the luckiest guy in the world and it’s because the military gets you places even after service.

Fucking do it. You’re gonna appreciate the little things in life. You’re gonna push yourself out of some physical discomfort maybe even mental which only makes you stronger in the end you’re going to be able to use your G.I. Bill to go to school and you’re gonna have an easier with benefits or business tax exemptions. And when you get out, it may seem like people are ahead of you at the moment, but just know you have a foundation built with concrete and you will outpace your piers.
