When the first vehicle in the convoy suddenly blew up, the Russian mercenaries knew something was wrong. Their objective, to capture an oil field in eastern Syria, was supposed to be a routine mission. The enemy they knew by then would have fled long ago at the sight of 500 battle-hardened Russian and Syrian fighters. But instead, the attack had come to an abrupt halt and explosion after explosion shook the ground. It wasn't long before AC-130 gunships, Predator drones, Apache helicopters and fighter jets were circling over the battlefield, pounding the attackers from every imaginable angle.

What the Russian forces didn’t know was that the oil field was not defended by any fighters, but by American Special Operations Forces, supported by the most powerful air force in the world. And so, within a few minutes, the routine mission turned into hell on earth - and into one of the deadliest engagements for the notorious Russian mercenary group Wagner.

The fact that the Russians gave out a medal that was basically for just surviving against the might of the US Military, has got to be one of the nicest compliments Russia could ever give to the US.

A crucial aspect of this battle not mentioned here is that when that first shot landed Russian communications went dead. The Americans were jamming _everything._ The Wagners couldn't call for any support, they couldn't coordinate beyond shouting range (which isn't very far when everything is exploding), they couldn't reach headquarters to get them to call off the Americans. The US wasn't just sending a message about their superior firepower and training but about their superior battle management: "cross the line, and you will die."

Russia: there are no Russian troops at that location
*several minutes of indiscriminate shelling and bombing later*
US: you’re right, there are no Russian troops there

US: “why are your mercenaries attacking the base?”

Kremlin: “I’ve never seen those men before in my life. Not Russians at all…anyway how about a ceasefire?”

[Russian HQ confirms there is no official Russian military presence]

Every American attack aircraft in the region: 😊✨

That was actually pretty smart of the Russian commander to not allow the sortie of those Sukhois. With that kind of firepower coming from the sky, I'm sure it's no stretch of the imagination to assume that the US Air Force probably had eyes on every inch of that flightline.

the fact that there were 200+ deaths and 3 platoons just crippled in MINUTES is astounding. This was a gloves off show of force.

“Are there Russian troops attacking our position?” “No?” “Then hold my beer…”

The Wagner PMC knew the Americans were there, they just underestimated the response.

You just know that those F-22 pilots were BEGGING the Sukhois to take off.

this leaves out the most hilarious part: the final strike before the US called it a day was by a B-52 carpet bombing the shit out of the wagner convoy with 30 2000lb JDAM's. The biggest "you are now finding out" message I've ever seen, lmao

I love that, a month later they tried again and got a call, 'Are you sure you want to do this again?' I can only guess the response was something like, 'Nah, we're good' lol

I heard a second hand story of how/when a German soldier knew they had lost WWII. The soldier spotted a US tank and was well outside of machine gun range so he thought nothing of it until the tank turned its main gun in his direction and fired. He quickly took cover and survived, but the fact that the US military was willing to use such expensive ammo to try and kill a single enemy soldier made him realize what hell his side was up against.

The biggest mistake America's enemies can make is to confuse our political will to fight with our military ability to fight.
