Both of them had a rough life, thrown away by society because they are poor. Unlike charlie chaplin who still had joy and happiness,

Arthur was already had enough and turn into joker, creating chaos

I find this scene funny because outside, there is an angry mob while everyone inside is enjoying an old movie without a single fuck given about what's going on in the city.

In comics and other media show Joker admiring Chaplin having posters and watching videos of him and even dressing as him from time to time

A curious fact within comic book fiction is that characters such as the Joker, Doctor Doom, Red Skull, Lex Luthor and many other supervillains consider themselves fans of Chaplin.
Perhaps it is that glimpse, that small light of humanity and tenderness that remains in their hearts.

Depressing contrast between the opulence of the theater and the decay and cheapness of everything outside of it. Heh, I guess regardless of freedom the rich and poor will always form and the poor will always get the short end of the stick, until the end of time.
