Lawrence Krauss: A Universe from Nothing.

In his new book, "A Universe from Nothing: Why There is Something Rather than Nothing," Arizona State University professor Lawrence M. Krauss explains how recent revolutions in our understanding of physics and cosmology allow modern science to address the question of why there is something rather than nothing, and more importantly, why this is a scientific question rather than a philosophical or theological one.

Krauss plays a skillful word game with this "nothing" doesn't mean absolutely nothing".  He just changes the definition of nothing to fit what he wants it to fit. Even the best models of the big bang theory have to have SOMETHING to bang.  If he admitts that SOMETHING has to bang together to make a bang than he has to admitt that that something came from somewhere.  He cannot admit that so he changes the definition of the word "nothing"...clever.

When the universe goes cold, that’s not nothing as before the universe was created. That’s still space

It's possible for something to come out of "nothing" especially for Lawrence who employs equivocation on the word, "Nothing." He writes that "empty space" is what formerly could have passed for "nothing." (Page 183 Line 9). And on the same page he adds, "we have discovered all signs suggest a Universe that could & plausibly did arise from a "deeper nothing" - involving the absence of space itself." Lawrence refers to the SINGULARITY as that DEEPER NOTHING. So the Universe came from singularity.

i find every thing about this subject totally fascinating, just like i as a child 55 years ago. Thanks for posting this. I watched a video years ago about the Sun. It blew my mind, and its where i first learnt how the actions inside the sun, affected the weather on Earth. Sadly, no one seems to remember or even learnt about this in Science 101. Otherwise we wouldnt be having the arguement that global warming was man made.

In his book Lawrence writes a lot about empty space. Go buy his book and read it.

If you are reading my post you should be able to read that I said "according to Lawrence Krauss". He change the meaning of "nothing" and that's why I am criticizing his statements in the video.

Sure, the Universe could come "from nothing" so long as we change the definition of "nothing" to actually mean "something."

@jimnpatcavell (continued) also, based upon fossil evidence, there were periods when the Earth was much warmer than it is today. I have gone scuba diving in caves with stalactites and stalagmites that were formed when the oceans were much shallower. Dinosaur bones have been found on the North shore of Alaska.
Are humans contributing to global warming/climate change? Most likely yes.
It is significant or insignificant? I think that is the big question.

The whole seemingly active Universe which we comprehend could be just a small activity of a some incomprehensible large being in its intestine or digestive system.

You said it's our job to refute your belief. How is that even possible? you can't possibly refute a negative. The burden of proof lies with the one making a claim.
The scenario I described is meant to show how rediculous it is to take beliefs as true just because they can't be disproven.

There is a big difference! Lawrence believes the Universe came from "deeper nothing" involving the absence of space or the point of Singularity - the initial state of the Universe before the Big Bang. This point of infinite density is clearly Something having infinite density, not the "Nothing" that we normally think of - the state of non-being or "what rocks dream about." Main difference is he believes the Universe came out of this point of Singularity BY ITSELF without the need of a Creator.

The reason why the U.S. values religion politically is that we have an engrained cultural belief that if you have religion it is the watch dog of moral behavior. The belief that there would be less crime, etc. Its this belief that needs to be dismantled and proven as the myth it really is.

That's because these are people who have not applied a part of their thinking to seeing the bigger picture on how everything is connected. They have to be educated on systems. Biodiversity, energy cycles, etc. Because, they are not aware of this they think linear, so they look out their window and judge weather by their personal bubble.

FROM refers to origin & not place! Lawrence defines "Nothing" as either "empty space" where the density of the Universe will become 0 or the initial condition of SINGULARITY where the density of the Universe was infinite. So when he says the Universe from nothing he meant the universe from a "deeper nothing" (as he calls it) referring to the point of singularity at the initial state of the Universe. Whereas the philosophers define nothing as "what rocks dream about" (a state of non-being).

Very nice scientist, quite interesting one.

Exactly what Lawrence is implying with the word, "deeper nothing" (Singularity) since he also mentions the "Multiverse" although he is not subscribing to the version of String Theory. This "deeper nothing" is not the "Nothing" that we normally think of which is - "what rocks dream about" or a state of non-being. Lawrence just uses the word, "nothing" to elicite excitement for his book although the title of the book is really misleading as he equivocates on the meaning of the word, "nothing."

@xknowledgeisfreex 11, 000 years ago, most to North America Europe Asia were covered with ice. The ice in upstate New York where I live was estimated to be between 1 1/2 miles thick. Scientists tell us that in the last, the Earth has experienced probably more than 40 ice ages with periods of warming between. In between each Ice Age, there was a period of global warming. No one explains what caused all those periods of global warming.
