that string reminds me of boxing.

you're using a lot of the front muscle to lift the leg. try moving your hip ion a figure eight pattern and tilting the hip. this will coil the leg and the foo will rise up.

Can you do a standing drop kick?

Think of a frisbee. it spins or rotates. but one side is always higher. the tilt makes it rise up. So it skips up and down. your hips should move in this pattern. Spinning.Bouncing. Lifting.
