Moving Recessed Lights

I just finished making the upper cabinet for the corner in my kitchen (build coming soon), but before I can install it, I need to move a pot light. I installed the pot lights originally for a different cabinet layout, but change the design with this cabinet. These ones are easy, since they are the retrofit type and done have a box or hangers inside the ceiling.

Here are some ways that you can help support the work I do in making these videos:

I'm very jealous of your mudding and taping skills.

Ahhhh the art of remodeling is to hide the change with mud and make everyone see the change, as the original plan, without any reference to the change at all. Well done.

Using the cut out as a patch was a great idea!

LOL - I did the exact same thing. I have almost identical looking bulkheads with almost identical looking pot lights. originally planned on a "L" shaped corner cabinet but then switched to the 45 degree corner cabinet but I already had a pot in the corner.

setting drill reverse works really well in this pplication. less likely ro grab, less likely to cut into cables and overall less violent procedure.(pilot hole must be drilled the right way ofcourse)

Now that IT is legal in Canada I was thinking about other pot lights.

Must be nice not having textured walls and ceilings. Here in Texas everything is textured which is a pain as its impossible to repair. But its hard to find a good drywall guy so they just cover their mistakes with texture. I have been skim coating all the rooms in the house as I remodel them.

I put my cans in after the cabinets but also did over and under cab lighting with led strips. I rarely use the cans as the led strip lights provide very adequate lighting without being too bright and they are indirect which is better anyway. But with the cans you can light it up like a surgical room...

Pot lights? I have watched the canadian shows and it always sounded like they were saying pod lights. Here we are more simple. In the US we call them can lights cause they look like a tin can. We stop short of calling it a majic glowing circle on the ceiling...

What's the best way to move a can light 4"-5" over and repair the space it was moved from?

It's that "couple of coats of mud later" that always seems to cause me trouble. (NOT skilled at mudding)

Are the pot lights just attached to the drywall - I've never installed pots? I was wondering how you detached and then re-attached the electrical box, but maybe pot lights are different.

Why couldn’t you saw the second hole with the hole saw ? You had plenty of room for the central bit ? I did exactly that a few weeks ago and I stumble unto a beam when making a hole so I had to move it by about 4 inches and I just used the hole saw to saw the second hole.

"added a couple of screws" - great idea that I wouldn't have thought of....
