The next time you are updating your light fixtures be careful selecting light fixtures with "integrated LEDs." There are a few concerns I have with these types of fixtures that could cause you more maintenance and pain down the road

They should be standardized so ppl can replace them like a lightbulb

Keep couple of lights as backup in case any of them fails after few years and the same model might not be available.

I find it harder each year to find incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, not to mention the cost. The LED panels are supposed to last 50K hours, that's almost 6 years of continuous use. I have a screw-in LED bulb in a lamp that never gets turned off except during power failures. It has been on for at least 13 years.

I'd be annoyed if my LED lights fail in two years. I haven't had that problem so far.

I have the exact same fixture he shows in the video (it's a Home Depot special). The fixtures will last much longer than bulbs for a number of technical reasons I won't go into bere. In any case, I've had mine 5 years and they still work like new. One of them is on half the day as well.

I've installed a couple of them in areas where I wanted more clearance and installing recessed fixtures wasn't really a good option. These fixtures are typically inexpensive and incredibly simple to replace. For laundry room, closets, basement fixtures they're a pretty good option.

These are valid points. I’m putting 80+ led lights into a new construction home for our family. We’re doing traditional cans with changeable led bulbs for this reason.

This is designed in. They are meant to fail for the benefit of the industry that makes them.

I do maintenance at a large university with thousands of leds. I'm convinced quality is decreasing and expect many premature failures. Even among the best brands.

I prefer the ones that take the screw base bulbs.

Hi, can you talk about when LED ceiling lights stay on after the power is turned off ? How do you fix this issue? Thanks 👍

I put 30+ LED lights in 8 eight years ago and haven't had a problem yet. I also bought 5 extras to have as back ups. I have no idea where they went but knock on wood.

Moved into my new house a ur ago and 8 months in the light failed. It was installed prior to moving in and now I have to replace

That's what stops me too. I don't rent my home out, but I still don't like the idea of wasting an entire fixure, just because the light itself needs to be switched out. I don't want to have to rewire anything unnecessarily, either. Honestly, next time I have to do that, I'm probably going to wire a plug in that spot, instead of a ceiling light, and just start hanging plug-in lights instead. I've even started boning up on how to turn hard wired chandeliers into plug-ins, so I can do the rest of my home the same way.

Built in integrated LED is a terrible idea. I built a brand new home and installed these integrated built in LED fixtures, around 5 years later 90% of them failed, or started flickering, of half dead.
Only the replaceable LED bulbs are a good idea, but definitely NOT recommending the integrated build in LED light fixtures.

You can get them do long as your prepared with a few extras. Most of them will last, but then you might get a few that won't, but at least you'll be ready. For the most part, I only get the integrated kind if I don't need it to match anything else.

Honestly though, if you have one that fails, it could be that it's defective, but it could also be something related to your electrical system. For example, if they are non-dimmable and you have a dimming switch, that might have noticable effects on the lifetime of the light. Dimmable LEDs with incompatible dimmers can have similar effects. You may notice these effects when it always seems to be the same light that keeps needing replacement.

These days though, I'm more likely to just change the light because I want a different light profile. I hardly need to change any of my LEDs, integrated or not, because it stopped working. Defective lights were more of a thing when they were first introduced, and a lot of it had to do with bad designs for dissipating the heat.

I'm new to these kinds of lights and love them. I did have an issue with my porch light going out on me after having it only a few months ago, but my electric bill has shown a difference, so I replaced a few more lights with led. The low voltage is a win, but if the lead doesn't last long enough, then I'll have to switch back to bulb light fixtures cause having to replace a hole light fixture every few months just isn't realistic for me. Has to last over the years.

Totally agree! I worked in a hospital we started updating to LED fast forward a couple years when they started failing it was near impossible to get perfect matches and upper management stated we needed the same color light in a hallway or a room. If the new one didn’t match now we had to replace all of them in that room or hallway!

Do I have to replace my fixture if they stop working? I have two in my kitchen. One went out. Please suggest. Thanks.
