I've always wanted to try oil painting, but I've been too scared to try - until now! So I decided to try and paint a dragon as my first oil painting, and this is how it went...

Every time I hear you say that you may have overestimated your skill level I smile because I know that this is another project that you are going to knock out of the park. My observation is that like water, you tend to rise to whatever level is necessary to achieve your goal. You are amazing, and after sharing your channel with my twelve-year-old (who is also an artist) she has started greeting me with "skjera bagera" in the mornings.

“I don’t have a clue how to use oil paints”
*proceeds to paint the most beautiful oil apple I’ve ever seen*
I’m amazed as always by your work!

My mother painted in oils so when I started painting, she would take me with her to classes and got me lessons with instructors that were all oil artists. I was in my 30's before I ever tried any other medium and at 65 I still struggle with acrylics. Honestly, if I could afford oils, I would use them all the time. I think with a little practice you will come to like oil better. There are lots of things you can add to oils to make them dry faster or take months to dry, depending on what you are doing. We used to put our pallette and brushes in the freezer inbetween sessions to keep the paint fresh.

I love the way you deal with light and dark in your paintings, it creates such an atmosphere. And that Dragon is sick!

Oil is a wonderful medium. You can thin it, layer it, use whatever tool to paint and the colours is just so.. alive.. Also it is so easy to correct faults, and it is so forgiving to paint with. You handled it wonderfully Martina! Bra jobbat! ;)

I feel like people don’t give Martina enough credit for the prep work she does before diving into a new process. She didn’t just buy a bunch of random pint and go at it, she did the wrong of learning techniques and experimenting and practicing. And that’s what makes her a great artist!

The cracking details in the horns are probably my favourite part, just because IT’S SO REALISTIC!! The amount of detail you put in this is amazing. I’ve always felt the same about oils and have actually been trying to pump myself up to try them, so your timing with this is not only fortuitous, but inspiring. Thank you!!

"This is my first time doing this thing, so it's going to suck!"
*Casually creates a masterpiece

I fall for it every time. Seriously though, that could be a book cover.

Test painting: apple
First official painting: epic dragon breathing fire

I absolutely looove the contrast and the difference you can see in the paintings. You learned new techniques on the way and it (as always) look perfect ✨

Oh wow. If you turned that into a print, I would definitely buy it. Especially if it was poster sized. That piece is stunning!

It would take me YEARS to get this close to perfection.
Like... I went to art school. There was a long episode in my life where I drew every single day and yet I'm still overwhelmed of what you can pull of every single time.
What you do is just amazing and I pull my hat off to the work and effort you put into your projects.
You're really motivational. Thank you for that Martina! 🥰

Girl I feel like every video these days starts with "why did I do this" kinda mental state 😂 1. It always works out at the end. 2. I feel like you challenge yourself because somewhere deep inside you know you can do this cuz YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!! And 3. Challenging yourself makes you the amazing artist you are and That´s why (I´m sure I speak for a lot of people here) we love watching you!

This is so detailed and beautiful! I love how you can see everything down to the twists on the staff but it doesn’t look busy, just amazing.

Oil painting is easy in that you can wipe off a mistake and do it again, which is near impossible with water colour! Also, hope you're all fully recovered - it's good to see you again - and that puppy is adorable!!

Totally agreed with you when you said something was off about the fire, the way it blended into a kind of muddy effect, however personally I think you went from one extreme to the other with it. It went from blurry and muddy to vivid and white. I think it would have looked better somewhere in between.

As for your dragons scales, DEFINATELY overthinking there, they look fabulous. Nothing wrong with them. My favourite bit of the image though is the humanoid figure. Love the detail, the hair and the way it blends perfectly with the colour in the scene. 👏
