Filming

Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

To clean your brushes, you gotta "beat the devil out of them"

I'm feeling a bit jealous. I took an oil painting class 8 years ago and been practicing on and off since. I've spent hundreds of hours of researching and watching other videos. This video summarized everything I've covered and MORE in just 10 min. I heavily was researching nontoxic options for paint thinner since i have asthma. I asked the professor, classmates, other artists, the internet. No luck. I resorted to only using linseed oil. But then this guy just gives me the answer... like nothing. Wtf. This is gold.

This may sound weird but I really like the "speed" of how you talk. >.< Not too fast and not annoyingly slow that I have to change the playback speed.

I haven't painted with oil since the late 80's. I am 74 now and I think it is time to get back to my love of oil painting. Thank you for your crash course. It truly helped me remember what I need to start painting again. Thank you again

Wow, I can't believe you summed up all the basics in 10 minutes - it literally took me months to figure this stuff out on my own when I first started! Very impressive, keep up the amazing content :)

I'm a graphic designer, I went to art school in the late 90's early 2000's. I had an 11 week color theory class. We use gouache and the only colors we were allowed to use were magenta, pthalo blue, yellow and black (we could only use the black for mixing grayscale values). I probably painted and cut out over 500 1 inch by 1 inch color swatches over that time. At the time I hated every minute of it. But by the end of that 11 weeks I could create any color possible with just 3 tubes of paint without even thinking about it. It was one of the most valuable classes I've ever taken in regards to my art career. There are a lot of skills to learn to be a good painter, being able to mix colors, understand tints, etc. is a must.

If all beginner tutorial videos were this comprehensive and articulate the world would be a better place.

This video should be at the very beginning of the internet. I've spent so much time watching tons of videos that never got close to just giving me these basics. This is just amazing, thank you!

I just barely tried to paint my first ever oil painting tonight. Ah! I ran into some unexpected difficulties and turned to youtube to figure out what was going on. This video perfectly answered all my questions! Thank you!! Can't wait to check out more of your stuff.

I have not even started painting yet but found this so informative.

One of the best informative videos that I’ve watched by far. My ADHD causes me to be impatient or get bored quickly because many creators add too many details and it’s hard to keep me personally engaged and interested long enough to get to the information I need to know.
You were quick and to the point and didn’t waste time in between the different aspects in oil painting and it was very refreshing to be able to stay engaged, not have to fight myself to pay attention, and be able to finish a video….well finish it at 9 out of 10 minutes at least 😂

Thanks man for the last part about respecting your own effort and not feeling dejected. It has happened with me all the time.

I can’t even tell you how many videos I’ve watched to try to learn the information you summed up in a 10 minute video. Over YEARS as an acrylic artist wanting to move into a medium that intimidates me, you’ve given me the confidence to throw myself into oils. Thank you. You’ve got a new fan. 💜

When a 10 min video leaves you feeling like you’ve just done a short course. Incredible!

This young man has a great future ahead of him. A crash course on anything usually leaves me aggravated, but this was very well produced and not in the least bit annoying. Miracles happen.
