Thank you for posting this! As someone who has worked in the travel industry for 35 plus years (including 17 years with Northwest Airlines before they merged with Delta), this is important to all travelers who think they are saving money using budget carriers. I've been working for a travel management company since I left NWA, and I always advise my clients to avoid budget airlines if at all possible. Not only are the costs higher when you figure in your carry-on bag, seat assignment, and boarding pass, but they also have far more restrictions on the fares that you purchase. Please note that some full service carriers also have highly restrictive fares, so make sure you are always reading your fare rules before purchasing.

I don't say not to use them as they often fly to smaller airports that the major airlines don't, but make sure you do your research.

Ironically, a budget airline, Allegiant, is the only airline that flies direct from my small local airport to my elderly mother whom I visit regularly. I purchased a rolling bag with the under seat allowance in mind. I can pack easily 5 days of clothing, using compression bags, along with my makeup and a chromebook in the case, with room to spare. This packing planning has made the 3 hour flight one I can take every 8 weeks without busting my budget. The price you see is the price I pay. Plus, with an Allegiant credit card ($59 yearly fee) I get periodic coupons and ticket specials, plus a free drink and priority boarding on each flight.

When I travel lately I had to use the work travel planner and I mostly used the ‘full service airlines’ I haven’t had to use a budget airline yet so. Thanks for the advice-I think I’ll think twice before buying budget airlines.

I always fly the traditional "full service" airlines since I would rather be more comfortable than save some money (*if at all). Your explanations and examples between the differences of full service vs budget are excellent. The category for budget airlines is fast becoming "wanna be and in name only" budget airlines! All the airlines are guilty of fleecing their passengers with these endless charges!

Frontier kept us on the tarmac for 3.5 hrs AFTER we landed at our destination. No compensation, DOT no help either. I’ll never fly Frontier again. Full service airlines have more gates available. What a nightmare.

Thanks for doing the research and confirming what I suspected. I fly exclusively Delta because I live at a Delta hub with lots of midday flights which works great for me since I have to travel to get to the airport.

Unfortunately sometimes you don’t have a choice, as no other airline caters for a specific route 😢 wish I could chose something else than Easyjet to visit my family.

In 2000 I booked London to Dublin roundtrip for 4 pounds plus tax on Ryanair. Fortunately both my bag and my friend’s bag were weighed together since his weighed 70 (!) pounds and mine 8. I shutter to think what that would cost now !

Thank you for your time. Pretty funny actors in the opening scene. Thanks for adding the links. I read that airline "extras" racked in over 8 Billion dollars last year. BTW, there is no such thing as "full service" on any US carriers anymore, IMHO. :) There is barely any service. Thanks again. I'll be visiting Vietnam in October to see if I want to retire there. I will not be booking any US carriers.

After my last flight with Spirit over 10 years ago, I haven't been back. The hassles and the fees just turned me off. I just visited Australia and flew Jet Star. We paid for bags with the ticket, but their 20 Kg limit and 7 Kg carry on, we had to pay more. So maybe Qantas would have been better.

Is the backpack a personal item and not a carry-on?

Unless it's under 2 hours, then no. I think of them like buses.
