Great video, man! I'm loving my R5 for portraits. The review was on point. 🙌🏼

I never thought 8k was for average users. Canon made it clear what the limitations were before the camera was released. This was targeted for professionals as a B or C cameras for use in tight spaces. Where they are shooting a two minute screen in a car or any confining situation for tv or movies.

All this 4kHQ heating stuff was made clear before the r5s even shipped, so to complain now makes little sense. i use 5.1k oversampled crop mode 4k with zero overheating for wildlife, and the r5 is perfect for me. I cannot tell the different between 4kHQ vs cropped mode Oversampled 4k for what I do (except for the lack of the crop, but the crop is helpful for what I do because it means more reach and I don’t need to punch in in post). I am a hybrid shooter who shoots a ton of stills and some video. The only real downside I have with the r5 is the rolling shutter effect when using electronic shutter. So, as you said, it really does depend on who you are as to whether the feature set of the r5 is right for you, but most wildlife shooters LOVE the r5.

The reason the codec is tough is it is 10 bit 4:2:2. Most 10 bit codecs are 4:2:0. Once operating systems, GP firmware and editing software are all updated it will process much smoother.

Its not a solution for everyone, but the Atomos Ninja V irons outs most of the quirks for me and turns the R5 into an absolute weapon.

One note: Have you tried recording 8K Raw with 4K IPB super compressed proxy's from the camera? As we speak I'm editing an 8K Raw file with the Proxies from the camera on my computer, and it edits like butter, with no extra time needed to encode files. Also, with that IPB Super compressed file format, 4K HQ looks amazing too, and you still get 10 bit 4:2:2 files to edit smoothly in smaller file sizes. If you haven't tried it, give it a shot! Editing workflow with R5 files is a thing of the past for me.
EDIT - OK, just saw you spoke about it. Not sure why you have trouble with that format, as it edits smoothly on my mid grade PC.

The original R has been unbelievably reliable for me over the years. I ended up going with the a7SIII as an upgrade though because I was really nervous about some of the R5’s video issues, even though it was the one I originally wanted. The Sony has been great though, and is surprisingly easy to match with the R. 👍

Anyone wanting to build an 8k video editing computer should read, “How I built my dream 8k capable video editing PC. It’s on CNET. It cost him 7k. I’ve seen workstations that cost several times that. That’s why 8k is for production companies with the resources to acquire the necessary ancillary equipment.

You won't get hate if you make valid points. It's definitely overhyped but it's a specialist camera for specialist use. If you want an all round camera you need to put your hand in your pocket

I have the R5 and love it. I have the RF 15-35mm and like you, am finding it unusable for video. The wobble is ridiculous. Since purchasing the 28-70 F2 the 15-35mm will be sold immediately. The combination of the R5 and the 28-70 f2 is an absolute revelation. I use them both almost exclusively. Incredible pairing, and being a hybrid shooter, I'm at peace now. May get the R5c if things get serious. Thanks for your honest vids.

The overheating is a real bummer. For recording a-roll these days, I take the CFEXPRESS card out and record into an Atomos Ninja V (in 4KHQ) and it never overheats, nor does it have a record limit, so you can basically film as long as you want. Honestly, it shouldn’t need a workaround like this but it does fix that problem somewhat.

as an r5 owner i love my r5 its an amazing camera! im professional food and product photographer and i love everything about it! maybe the only issue i had the overheat when im shooting 120 4k for long time but anything else is great!. btw the files used to be hard to edit but now its flawless with my pc on adobe premiere. note that im using ryzen 9 with 3070 gpu

I which from EOS M3 to EOS R5, and it's amazing the amount of detail you can get from that 45 MP!

The only issue I genuinely have with this camera is overheating. That is the only reason I am avoiding Canon. Because I am a course creator and if you shoot videos whole day, that will either melt this camera or disable your entire operation.

Overheating solution: dummy battery and external recorder (like an Atomos V). Stop complaining about stuff that can be easily fixed.

Hey Johnny, great video and good points! I do also never film in 8K but I do pretty much always film in 4KHQ. I have to say that my 16 inch MBP (specced) handles the files well. Can’t wait to see how the M2 chips will do when they drop later this year!

I use the R-5 and a Komodo. I have only had the R-5 for about a month, but I have been reaching for the R-5 more and more because it's simply smaller. The Sony A7s III is great, but the color is not as good and I don't care what anyone says. Also, the A7S III has crappy IBIS. I have both and I'm selling the Sony. Tons to love about the Sony, but I'd rather deal with the weirdness of the R-5.

I'm wondering if you've tried the Premier Pro beta version yet on your M1 mac? It is shipped as a universal binary, so it will run natively and ought to be as fast as Resolv or final cut. It's easy to download (in the creative cloud app, there is a list of categories in the column on the left after "APPS' and "PLANS & PRICING - with Photo, Graphic design, video ... ending with Beta apps). It is differently named so you can keep both versions at the same time.

I use the R5 as an aviation photographer and do ZERO video work so not concerned nor have experience with it. It is an AMAZING stills camera IMO. Been shooting Canon DSLRs for 6 years and would say the only downside of this Mirrorless world is the EVF... Not a fan. I'm shooting in a more narrow lane than most so take that FWIW. Tracking and shooting fighter jets clocking in the 500mph up to Mach 0.98 is far easier for me with an OVF (I've heard this is more common w/ folks who shoot fast sports and action). Great review BTW... balanced and reasoned.

You make some great points homie! Most likely when I upgrade I'll rock with the Canon R6. 😏📸
