I went to the premiere in 84 and thought it was a bit nuts but over the years, the more I watch it, the more I love it.

I saw the theatrical version in 1984 - and I remember being able to follow the exposition and plot to about 2:52 in this video. The whole rationale of the Bene Gesserit, and side plot about Paul's birth, completely flew by me. But now I finally understand why Paul fought "Sting" after the Harkonnens had already been defeated.

Fun fact: Writer and director David Lynch turned down Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) to direct this Dune (1984), telling George Lucas, "It's your thing, it's not my thing."

Oooh my turn to get some pedantic 'Umm Actuallys' in.

Faster than light travel in Dune is done using a Holtzman drive that folds space. The Guild navigators are needed to do the calculations required to not drive right through a star or something. You can use the drive without a navigator but it's much more dangerous. They used to have computers to do the calculations but they got a little murderery and led to a Imperium wide ban on high end thinking machines.

Also the kwisatz haderach is only part of Freman prophecy because it was planted there by the Bene Gesserit generations ago as means to control them if need be.

Very much looking forward to seeing the new version.

If my memory serves me correct, the narration explaining the background with paintings wasn't shown in the theatre in 1984 but was added for the television version (1988), in which David Lynch refused to put his name on.
The film just started with Princess Irulan giving a short narration.

Yes, I’ve read the books and liked the Linch movie + the mini series. I remember the fuss from people when it was released, but over the yrs I’ve seen groups like it or hate it. I’ve seen it many times in slightly different versions and like the score. Look forward to the new Dune too.

Umm...actually...Lynch played no part in the extended TV edition of Dune, so that's why they used Alan Smithee for that version only. Lynch's name is on the theatrical 135 minute version.

Without spoiling the books and the new movie, whoever wrote the ending for Dune 1984 had literally no idea what the books were about nor what is the point of there being a desert planet at all. However I do like the movie for what it is, a weird Lynchian take .

If you don't read the first six Dune books you will not understand just how deep this story goes.

Dune is like a Reagan era anti-drug psa.
The spice is NOT worth the risk if it can turn you into a giant nutsack monster. 😭

Alia IS what is called "abomination" by the Bene Gesserit. She was awakened to consciousness whilst still in utero and because she was exposed to the Water of Life, she can hear her ancestral memories. The Bene Gesserit warn that this risks the young mind being taken over by a stronger ancestral personality so they guard against it and call the condition nasty names.
Spoiler for later in the book series ....

they are eventually proved right as Alia is "possessed" and turns to the dark side.

I thought "Muad Dib" was the name of the mouse on the second moon?

My dad and uncle were big sci fi fans and were amongst the first to read Dune when it first came out. I've heard them and others say that the book was considered unfilmable but I think the attempts have been good efforts - although I think the miniseries did a better job since there was more time to tell the story. I'm curious how the new movie will tackle it.

I am excited to hear you opinion of the Dune 2001/2003 miniseries from the Syfy channel? It went a more in-depth, it was still confusing but I liked it!

Should be noted that the version Lynch removed his name from and which included the excessive exposition and graphics (paintings) was NOT the theatrical version but the extended TV version. Exposition in the theatrical version was much leaner and handled primarily though an on-camera narration by the Emperor’s daughter.

The 80s version had darker sand but lighter people, now it's the other way around (minus Jessica again)

I was around 10 when this version came out and I really dug it. I’m looking forward to this new take especially since my spirit animal Jason Momoa is in it. Please continue your coverage of the rest of the series, TS. You’re the only one I trust to give it a fair shake. -Fear is the mind killer!
