A Sandisk extreme pro SD card (one of the fastest available) makes a huge difference to performance. Adding a small heat sink and keeping the lid off the Pi case is also necessary to avoid overheating.

Bit of a tip/plea: if you are wanting to grab a Pi as a desktop, please look at buying used for your monitor and accessories. Reusing hardware will allow you to get a better deal and save money and also stop stuff from going to landfill.

Considering the PI was originally developed for schools etc for teaching code, this tiny board has come a long way. I'm still attempting to get a public Return To Castle Wolfenstein (2001 game) mp server running on mine. Best of British :)

I used a Pi4 as a desktop on a single monitor for a good three months running Manjaro Linux and it worked pretty nice. Only reason I build a SFF PC was because I wanted something I could play games on from my Steam library while I was at work. Highly recommend Manjaro Linux as a distro to use, because it's very user friendly.

The Pi has definitely come a long way as you said! I haven’t purchased the pi 4 yet but very soon since builds have been trickling in.

Having everything together like this for a small price and with a book it reminds me of those learning microcomputers like the Atari or Commodore (or in my case Didaktik).

Have you actually tried to use it as a replacement? The Explaining Computers channel has a video where uses it exclusively as his desktop for a week, and that includes video editing.

If I didn’t have all the audio production stuff I use my computer for, this is absolutely what I would run. They’re inexpensive to buy and inexpensive to run, and they do everything most people need.

Damn, it runs about as smooth as my old core 2 duo system while being 20 times smaller and 12 years newer

When I was flat broke and my pc blew, I managed to continue my web design and coding business on an Asus EEE netbook for a year. It even had enough power (and space on its 16Gb drive) left over to play Oolite under Linux. You can get by on a lot less than you think.

For people that want ideas on what to use a pi for. I used it for video surveillance, retro games (nes, game boy), and a backup pc for when my main pc died. Everything was super easy. I went from not doing anything to creating a multi boot sd card in about 15 minutes. Adding things was so easy. They have this thingy where you just pick what you want and it installs it for you. Sorry I haven't used it in awhile but I'm sure you can figure it out in a few minutes.

The Flirc RPi4 aluminum case make an excellent heat sink.
Upgrading to booting and running off of a SSD is also worth the money for anyone more than a casual user.
