In my case, the firewall component of McAfee Total Protection was blocking this service. Once I allowed/approved that service, I was good to go.

run services.msc or start it from task manager click on bottom right service with administrator privilege symbol find desired service as esam said restart it by right clicking bingoo  no system restart needed

Thanks! But now in Windows8 you can just use the task manager to restart the service without restart the PC.

No need to restart, go to the service and start it manually

here's how to do it without restarting: click windows button, search for "services", find the VMware Authorization Service, right click on it and select Start
