The family of imprisoned Egyptian activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah said they were allowed to see him on Thursday and that his condition has "deteriorated severely" following a dramatic hunger strike.

The news was posted in a tweet by his sister Mona Seif after a visit to the prison of Wadi el-Natroun, north of Cairo, by the activist's mother, aunt and his other sister. It was their first time seeing him in nearly a month.

The British-Egyptian activist has spent most of the past decade in Egyptian prisons, is currently jailed since 2019 and was sentenced to five years in prison in 2021 for “spreading false news”. In April this year he began a hunger strike which lasted for more than 200 days as his family continued campaigning to British authorities to sign his release.

During the COP27 climate conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, various politicians and activists raised Alaa’s case in the hopes of securing his release.

May Allah help you and families like you sisters, Ameen! Be strong In Sha Allah, Allah will provide a way out. I can see that you are not in a hard condition but in a terrible condition. Have your hopes and prayers on Allah sister. In today's world, reaching out to people in-need is very challenging. We should try our best and leave the rest to Allah.
