☘️ I Got Rid Of Over HALF My Daughter's Stuff 📦🙋 The Whole Decluttering Process & Lessons Learned

Decluttering a child's bedroom is NO JOKE. Toys, books, clothes, papers... This took several months. 😳 BUT the results were totally worth it! My daughter and I are sharing what we learned along the way while getting rid of more than half the contents of her room.

I really like the fact that Scout got the final say in what was included in the video and what was off limits. I really appreciate that as it’s really important to teach and respect boundaries. Most decluttering gurus (for lack of a better word) claim that a person can only declutter their own stuff but not their partners or family members. The only exception is very small children. So I was a bit surprised when I saw that there were certain items which Scout wanted to keep but you had your doubts. According to the ‘rules, you can only have 4 piles: keep, donate, sell, trash… But why not have another pile? A keep pile but I have some remarks or questions pile as the adult helping you. You keep the momentum but you can reassess it later. At the end of the session you could have said: Well done but you may have noticed that I made a smaller keep pile on the side. I would like to go over them again, share my thoughts and then you get the final say. We all have stuff in our keep pile that may be perceived to others as trash. Typing all this up also makes me wonder: how many of the items that Scout wanted to keep in the first round but you had your doubs were removed by Scout herself in the second round?

Our daughter and her kids live with us. They’re only 2 months and 3 years old, but already I feel overwhelmed with stuff! I like the idea of decluttering slowly and patiently.

With the 3 year old, I’ve started introducing the idea of donating toys and letting her choose some things to give away. It’s her mom who resists decluttering.
