You are awesome my daughter has a hard time sounding out so she gives up and say anything it gets frustrating but this is a lot easier I feel like I need to take a class in order to teach this thank you

In a phonics lesson, these words are called open syllable words which make the word have a long vowel sound.

Do, oo, to,
You're COMPLETELY RIGHT and I'm just being a smart ass. I learned to read phonetically which put our class way ahead of "normally taught" kids. In 4th grade (age 8 or 9) we had one intellectually challenged girl. She read at grade level. The best readers read at the 12th grade level.
However I remember my parents having fits of laughter at my attempt to spell "from".

I think this is confusing for a child. Too many exceptions. I just teach them as sight words. Good for their memories too.

He is just teaching them to sound out the word. That is the way a lot of us older individuals were taught which is the most effective way. Now they are teaching kids, by having them to memorize words. That is HIGHLY ineffective because many children today cannot read and write properly. Yet they still continue to teach through memorization.

We live in uzbekistan and use latin letters...and my sister can read arabic letters at her 4 ... of course she doesn't understand what she's reading, but she reads pretty well

Some need to be memorized. To doesn’t have the long o sound, even in the open syllable in the word together. Those are open syllables. Teach open/closed syllables first… when you have high-frequency words that don’t follow the rules, teach them as sight words.

What about words like sow? What's the rule?

Ineffective what about "to" or "do"

You need to incorporate accents into the lesson! That's what many of us were lacking from our us education on words that do not derive from English language or grammar

I’m teaching my son to read this way and it made me realize how stupid English is. Like this rule does not apply to all words, and so many more. My child gets upset quickly when he’s confused and it just makes things so difficult 😞

Wait until she does the word "to", she's gonna say toe....
