Where do you suggest a parent start when teaching their kid to read? I have a 3 year old and I don’t know where to start

This is just how all kids are taught to read. I've never heard of anyone just being taught sight words.

This is how teachers taught in the 80's, no child left behind changed a lot of things and actually left a lot of children behind.

I love this dad. I wish all kids had a father like him ❤

This is how I teach my students! They're a bit older so they're learning spelling rules like CVC patterns and long vs short vowel sounds. It helps them so much and takes a lot of pressure off of spelling tests since they aren't memorizing every word, they're just remembering the rule

Bro your kid’s gonna have an aneurysm the day she reads “Tough”, “Through”, “Thorough”, and “Throughout” and they all sound completely different

They do this in UK schools. I just assumed that would be standard practice.

Thank you! Unfortunately so many schools are using reading curricula that rely heavily on memorizing and guessing based on context/pictures rather than sounding out words.

You can't always just sound out words. The English language is one of the hardest to languages to learn how to read.

Yes! This is how I've always learned different languages. It's all pattern recognition. Play it like a puzzle game and it's fun.
