Cool trick my teacher taught me: if the essay due is supposed to be 2 spaced, then start writing the essay in 1.5 or 1 spaced. When you reach your limit and you cannot write any more, crank it up to the required spacing. It’s amazing. This technique saved my butt. You can use the same concept with a smaller font as well

Adding random words isn’t the best but with the examples like ‘due to the fact that’ it changes up what I say because for me I normally use the same words over and over again and it’s better to make each paragraph/sentence different by using different words (in my opinion).

Bro I was homeschooled and even I know those hacks for high school essays is because the goal teachers give is essentially not to make a good essay, but to hit arbitrarily high word counts

I mean I'm not defending the people on TikTok who suggests this "essay hacks" but I think the purpose was to lengthen the word count especially most teachers that makes their students create essays has a required amount of word count. I don't think it will actually make the essay boring, just slightly more complicated-sounding but longer although I never used that.

edit: Also I agree with most people who replied to this comment, I'd say too that it's not entirely effective, especially if you're doing it on a college essay. I'd say you should focus more on writing it without looking at the actual word count because sometimes looking on how many you have already written pretty much limits you on writing freely. You'd be surprised you wrote more than the given word count (or at least that works for me).

The reason that this is being recommended online (or at least I believe it's the reason because I'm in the European school system) is because in other parts of the world they want very descriptive and long essays instead of essays concise and to the point. I've always been one to be concise and to the point because imo if I'm able to explain something and get the point across not only to people specialized in my field but most people I feel like it's doing what I want it to do.

One thing to make your essay better though is to use a thesaurus and use simple synonyms so you don’t keep repeating the same words

I actually recommend saying "due to the fact that"instead of "because".Not for making it longer but when in English we have to answer questions with "why"we never are allowed to use "because".

advice for teachers: do not try to make us reach a certain word limit. I'm so thankful that even if my English teacher lists 50 ways to get an F, he still helps us and more importantly, doesn't assign us absolute garbage assignments. you don't need a ton of words to express and idea and...

I had a teacher that just looked at your paper and said "eh too short" and you would get a lower grade just for that reason. A long essay with a beautiful handwriting would've gotten you a perfect grade especially if you were a female student, the irony being that he was a psychology teacher and didn't know what a bias is. He really did not care what you actually wrote on his essays.

As someone that hasn’t been to college yet, fluffing your essay is actually great advice, all our teachers cared about was word count.

This is advice for high school essays where you have to meet a word count goal. I doubt anyone would do this for a collage essay.

THIS!!!! I hate editing essays and seeing this. Especially sucks when people have really strong points that they can just expand on a bit more but they choose to add fluff instead. Being concise is so important!
