Changing the order of operations is always a great idea to make stories more original.

I ran a D&D campaign recently where the story didn't follow the typical "Discover problem, find person causing problem, stop person from causing that problem." Instead, the players themselves were the problem!

It turned the whole story on its head, with none of the players agreeing how to resolve it. One just wanted to leave the area to minimize damage, but another said they were obligated to fix the damage they had already caused, and yet another said that they needed to solve the issue that made the players the problem in the first place so it never happens again.

Getting rid of the trope of "someone or a group of people are causing all of the issues" made things more complex and varied.

Don't do this. In the kindest tone possible, this is high school trash. Research based scholarship isn't about plot, it's about providing a path for your reader to engage in discussion with your topic. If you want to be a successful academic writer you need to be upfront with your central argument and support, not drag the reader through your process. The discourse can be bellatristic with carefully selected language, but if a student wasted my time by textually plotting through their thought processes they wouldn't earn more than a 76.
