I once saw a video of a girl reading her essay. She started more or less like: “I hate the letter S”, and then explained that instead of parents, in plural, she now had only a parent due to cancer. It was really emotional.

That is the best beginning sentence anyone could have ever come up with. I disagree with essays on principle, but that really shows voice and also consideration in 4 words.

Edit- Sorry for leaving y’all hanging, I didn’t realize my comment had blown up this much. To answer some questions, it was my common app essay, and yes I did get in to the schools I applied to. For context my essay was about my time volunteering for adaptive sports where I helped coach Wheelchair Lacrosse. It’s a contact sport so one of the drills is pushing over the players’ wheelchairs so they can practice getting back up.

Nothing wrong with a quote if you know how to use it and relate it back to yourself. For instance, during my university days; my letter started with an economics quote and why it fascinated me so much etc etc and all my universities wanted me

My entire essay was kinda like a story rather than an essay I told a story from my life that caught the over all theme of my early childhood and it seems to have worked well my grades are sub par like they aren’t horrible but I wouldn’t have gotten in to college if all I sent is my transcript my essay was a very strong part of my application my teacher cried while reading it said it touched her heart… and then a month later I received a 70 thousand dollar scholarship
