I continue to see this over and over again so I thought I would send out a quick tip video today as a reminder about proper mowing and how important it is to a healthy lawn. No more scalping!! If you have a friend that needs to hear this message, please share. :)

Correct advice as always. I would also add that if you have uneven ground on the lawn (not everyone will level their ground by top dressing regularly each autumn) its better to mow high than low to avoid scalping the higher bits.

I’m in the Chicago area, and this time of year, I’m cutting at 3.75”. I’ll drop it down to 3.25” when September comes. 2.75” the last two or three mows before winter.

Great tip Ryan. I see many people just trying to throw products and fertilizer down and then having bad mowing techniques like cutting super short and wondering why there lawns don't look great. Proper mowing is crucial in a good looking lawn. Great video!

Thanks for the reminder. Last week I semi scalped the lawn and it did not look good. Adjusted the mower height and after yesterdays mowing it looks great.

they just did that across the street from me!: basically a 'no mow lawn' that the previous owner had 'okay' with some native stuff and a lot of work to keep it, now the new owner cut down the big shade tree(for firewood?) and so now full sun that they let the yard go still with never mowing all season; of course things got out of hand, and the other day(in the extreme heat) they had the neighbor kid spend 5min buzzing it down with the side discharge into the street(no clean-up, blowing crap into my lawn) ugh!.... I this spring I did convince another guy across the street to mow more early in the cool season, instead of only heavy mowing hot summer, and I can clearly tell the difference in just that change; his yard is now much more even, with less out of control weeds shooting up all summer, so now easier to mow the few times they do it that some people think you have to do a lot of horrible mowing in the summer and fight it, when if you just mow more often during the spring and fall(cool season, when good grass is active) you get a better lawn that needs less work when it is hot

Great tips! Just smoked my front yard last weekend as I prepare to level and renovate. Ryan’s tips are great because I did the first app last week and I can see missed spots I need to hit next week. And I’m watering the dead grass to encourage any remaining bastards to grow so I can smoke those too. His tip is to start early and it’s paying off.

In the summer time I bump my mower deck up a click or two not to cut the grass too short. Keep up the great work sir. Cheers.

Confession time. My backyard is going on 1 month since its last cut... Granted we've had about 1in of rain in that amount of time, but its starting to get LONG. going to cut it on my highest setting now.

Imagine being Ryan Knorr's neighbor and making his video with him being like "look at this idiot with their messed up lawn"

Another is letting those who you hire scalp it themselves. Most are only concern to keep it short and trimmed, grass health is not their priority. I have St Aug grass that once was cut really short by folks whose machines were way too heavy and no matter what the adjustments it would cut short. From then on I do my own maintenance and with tips from your page my lawn is thriving in this heat. Thanks!!

Thanks Ryan! I applied PGR this season and have found the lawn is barely growing during the peak heat of the past few weeks (Illinois KBG). Not sure if that is contributing to patches turning brown. Next time I may use half dose or no dose during hot stretches. With any growth that does occur I do get nervous about cutting it thinking it may contribute to brown areas. Always open to ideas. Keep up the good work

I've been mowing once a week or less at 4". I sharpen the blades up beforehand and only mow the hour before sunset. Only green lawn in the neighborhood !

I live in Easley, South Carolina & I cut my lawn this past Sunday. It didn't get too high but I normally cut my grass on the number 2 setting but this is also the first time that I ever bagged my grass. My grass does not appear scalped but I was worried at first because it had been a few days without raining. I use to cut on the number 3 setting but I felt it was too high & that it grew back too fast. I live in a rural part of Easley & snakes can be a problem sometimes so its more imperative that I cut the grass as low as possible however the grass has survive but I am thinking that the next time I mow I will cut on the three setting & see how it looks. Thanks for the tip bro.

I laugh with delight every time I see the drone view. The property doesn’t look like it belongs in that neighborhood. Ryan’s neighbors must hate him for that. Lol!!!
