The biceps work as a dynamic stabilizer from about 0-60 degrees of shoulder flexion. Raising your elbow/shoulder is not "shortening your biceps" more. It's really just dropping the resistance/ moment arm to zero at the top of the movement.

Retract your shoulders slightly and keep them fixed there. Focus on smashing your forearm into your biceps.
