What to do if you get a nail in your Tesla's tire

My Tesla Model Y doesn't come with a spare tire. I just ran over a nail and it is leaking air. What should you do? This is what I did to get back on the road and it didn't cost me a dime. I'll explain how this happened and what a good repair process entails.

I love Discount Tire. They are always very professional and helpful. They even fixed my riding mower tire once, no charge. Great advice on tire issues.

Hey Grandpa Ron, you don't have any more tread on your shoes! Time to get new shoes!

I carry a tire plug kit in the trunk of my Honda Clarity. No spare like your Model Y. Takes a bit of muscle to ream out the hole left by the nail, but they work quite well.

Excellent advice, Ron. I appreciate you sharing your wisdom. I pick up my model Y tomorrow, and my adventure begins.

We seem to live similar lives Ron. We bought out View in 18 and got a screw puncture on the very first trip followed by a second puncture on a following trip. Picked up our Model Y on 3/24 and got a puncture from a screw on 3/26. Only 270 miles on the car. My tire pressure was dropping about a pound every 5 minutes. Discount tire was about 1 mile away and took the car right away with no appointment. They know Tesla's and have the correct equipment to jack up the car.

Had my model why only one month and a mail got me. Was able to plug it on the car and saved a ton of money. Regardless I ordered portable compressor and a portable jack for the next time this happens.

Loved the reasoning used to consider repair options. Well done. Thanks!

Teslas generally are more prone to getting nails because of the sheer weight of the vehicles as well as Regenerative Braking. I’ve already had 4 or 5 in mine.

My psi was down to about 20. I slowly drove to Auto Zone and bought the flat repair can, sealed it and drove to filling station (if you can find one with working air), inflated tire, no problem since.

Good video Ron, looks like those shoes are going to need a plug soon.

Yup. Many tire companies in both the U.S. and Canada will fix these kinds of punctures for free. Unless they are crazy busy they will work on it immediately too. I had a puncture on a road trip and pulled into a tire place and was on my way 15 minutes later.

Ron, how'd they patch the tire? Do your tires not come with the foam installed? Did the kid cut away the foam to install the patch?

I’ve had all kinds of bad luck with tires. Hit a pot hole in my model 3 lost both passenger tires. Also have had three nail and deck screws too

For the price of these vehicles. They really should come with run flat tires

Thanks for the great video clip & good advice for Model Y owner. What's the air compressor that you use? Is it good? Would you recommend to keep Air compressor in the model Y?

I know you don't recommend tire sealant in this. But could you tell me whether tire sealant be able to fix problem when nail puncture the side of the tire?

Be careful ! Make sure the tire repair place understands how to raise a Tesla without damaging the battery.
