In college, we were building a diesel engine. I dont exaclty know what happened or what someone did but it started to "run away". One of our instructors yelled for everyone to run out the shop but our other instructor grabbed a big ass chevy engine manual and chucked it into the intake. That ended up saving the entire project and what's left of that book is hanging up in a frame in the shop to this day.

EVERY diesel SHOULD come with emergency air intake shutter like the old DDs had.

He tried to dump the clutch but only succeeded in snapping the input shaft. That's what usually happens when you try to dump the clutch on a runaway truck. It works in smaller engines.

Its definitely intimidating to open the hood and block the intake while the engine is on self destruct

Now you're going to get drivers saying 'how do I get my truck to shoot flames up the stacks ?'

One thing is for certain, you don’t want to be near a runaway diesel. If lucky they just eventually seize up, it’s when they start and throw rods and other parts that it gets really ugly.

Of course the REAL lucky outcome is you manage to stop it somehow…but the damage is normally done pretty quickly.

I'm surprised a big rig like that doesn't have a throttle body on the air intake. Yes, I know diesels don't use throttles to run, but the diesel engine in my car has a throttle body on the air intake which closes when the ignition is turned off. It's a good safety feature as it cuts off the air supply safely.

Just like on modified diesel truck pulls big rigs should have a manually driver cable operated guillotine in front of the turbo to choke off the in coming air into the engine prevent runaway👍🏿

props to the driver looks like he did just about everything to shut her down, even saw him mash the brakes and dump the clutch. truck powers through the clutch though...

Turn on the Jake brake, turn off the cruise control, put the transmission in neutral, release the clutch, leave the ignition in the on position.
The Jake will now act as a Rev limiter and give you time to kill the air to the engine.

I've heard if you have a big enough Co2 or dry chem fire extinguisher, you can try to dump in into the air filter all at once and try to smother the engine. At this point, the engine it pretty much trashed anyway. You are just trying to save everything else.

Shoulda stuck around and filmed the engine seize up

Yeah, that’s when you grab your wallet and phone, unhook the trailer, roll the truck clear, and get the hell clear of the blast radius.

Looks like the driver tried to dump the clutch. My thought exactly as this has happened to me before with a blown cylinder.

That Semi shooting flames out the stacks better than all the Jet Powered Semi Trucks such as Shochwave, Bob Motz, and all the others.

The Able's Guns & Ammo sign was a good backdrop.

Almost 'Murica'd right through my jorts.

The tractors I grew-up driving (60s & 70s) would only shut down when you pulled the little spring-loaded plunger / knob that closed-off the air intake, the engine stopped, then you let go of the knob. If I ever buy a truck, I'll be installing a big mechanical throttle body with a physical cable that leads to a physical knob to pull inside. It blows my mind that a simple manual air cutoff isn't a basic part of EVERY diesel truck's dashboard.

Quick safety tip: if you see a diesel in runaway, avoid getting next to it. They can throw a rod like the biggest grenade you ever seen
