Ray Palmer is one of the most interesting characters in the history of publishing. He is often credited as the man who invented flying saucers. He took the mad writings of one Richard Shaver, who claimed to have been kidnapped and escaped from these mad, underground dwelling robots he named Deros, and passed them off as fact.

Palmer, along with business partner Curtis Fuller, started Fate magazine which published true accounts of the paranormal and was sort of like the YouTube of its day. but Curtis Fuller, didn't want Palmer's sensationalism and so rather quickly bought him out and ran the magazine very successfully for several decades with his wife, Mary.

Arguably, Ray Palmer is the most interesting and influential publisher of the entire pulp era.
