The Doors were coming off a year that included their breakthrough to the masses with one of the most iconic songs of the rock era, Light My Fire hit #1 and it didn’t sound like anything or anyone. Then they had another strange song that was a major hit from their second album that killed the sophomore jinx... People Are Strange. When they released their third album in 2 years Jim Morrison wanted one thing and the record label wanted another. The label pressured the band to release another hit single. Well, it just so happened that they had been sitting on a no-doubt-about-it hit song for years: Hello, I Love You. But they thought it was a sellout and felt the lyrics were too shallow. But with the pressure on they put it out. And just like the band thought… it became a #1 hit. Up next one of the last living members of the band Robby Krieger, tells the story as well as the fact that the band tried to recruit Paul McCartney to be their lead singer when the Beatles broke up. The stories are next on Professor of Rock.

Poll: Who is your pick for the greatest guitarist of the 60s and 70s?

Funny, when I read the title about a joke about dumb love songs, the first thing that came to mind was Silly Love Songs by Paul McCartney.

The Doors recorded and released “Hello, I Love You” in 1968. The only hint that it was about a black girl is the “dusky jewel” line. In 1969, The Stones recorded “Brown Sugar”, released as a single in 1971.

“Brown Sugar” is the most overtly sexual song about a black girl imaginable. It must have caused shock waves. If The Doors tapped on that door, The Stones smashed it to smithereens! Great interview, Professor!

In this interview, Robby's demeanor gives me a very strong impression. It's as if Robby was sleeping when you rang his doorbell, and so he dragged himself out of bed... came to the door... looked you up and down and said,
_"Yeah?"_
To which you replied with a big smile and a sunny disposition,
_"Hi! It's me! The Professor of Rock! I'm here for the interview!"_
To which he replied,
_"...oh...is that today??"_
And still smiling, you said,
_"Yeah... Remember on the phone you told me _*_Come on by my place, Tuesday at noon."_*
And he said,
_"Right... Right... Tuesday at well...uhm... sure, c'mon in."_

When i was attending Cornell University in the early 1980s, one year, there was a sorority across the street. They were doing something outdoors and had a massive stereo belting out music. I distinctly remember the Doors song "Hello, I Love You" playing at one point. If you've never heard that song over a killer sound system with ample bass, you haven't really experienced that song.

What really makes "Hello, I love You", for me, is the breakdown. Just brilliant!

I loved The Doors! There's a video somewhere on YouTube of them. They all looked very young and when Jim started singing it's such a shock to hear his voice coming out of that baby face. ❤

My favorite group. I'm so glad Robby and John are still around to tell stories about the group's past. Love street, the crystal ship are awesome. Tell all the people from the soft parade is one of my favorite door's songs.

I'll never forget Robby with a Black eye on The Smothers Brothers. What a great guitarist. Rider's on the Storm kick ass.

As a kid growing up in the 60's it was amazing hearing The Doors on the radio. They were different from everybody else and made you realize that music could go in so many more directions than many of us could realize.

One of my dad's favorite bands, he passed that on to me. Just a true standout in the landscape of rock history.

"Hello, I Love You" is one of my favorite songs by The Doors--I knew about the similarity between that song & "All Day & All Of The Night" by The Kinks.

I've listened to the Kinks and Doors for years, and never made the connection between 'Hello, I Love You' and 'All Day, and All of the Night'.

I “discovered” the Doors in the early 80’s when I was in college. Was fortunate to see Robby with Eric Burdon at a small club in the late 80’s. Great show!
