To a character in the show, it probably just looked like Aang stopped that chicken leg in mid-air for a second. But that would be impossible UNLESS he was an airbender. It’s just a logical conclusion to come to after seeing what he can do.

....and it also probably helps since the person who “realized” he was an airbender and the Avatar was Bumi, Aang’s old friend. I’m sure he knew the entire time lol.

my gf had the same reaction (as the 2 girls on the left) on her first time watching avatar, too. kind of spacey, not really paying attention, not getting it, etc, but only because she wasn't interested at first. she really started appreciating it in season 2 and 3, and now its one of her top 3 shows of all time.

edit: just to add, my gf is typically into dramas (breaking bad, better call saul) and reality tv (bachelors, those real estate reality shows, etc)...so it's not like she has a history with "action cartoons" such as avatar

I see our haters are starting to pay a little of attention to the show... that's a great sign. Still not enough, though: it would be better if the two sisters did not sit together. They distract each other from minor details and major plot points alike.

okay, this show used to air on my tv every morning when I was a kid and I was never ever interested in it. I can't believe that I am now trying to push through season 1 only because of Addie. She is so passionate and feels emotional in every video and I need to know why : give me the tears and heartbreaks, I'm here for it ✨

The show has absolutely already told you the story... the first lines of the very first episode did exactly that. And they repeat it at the opening of every episode.There's so much more to it of course, pieces and backstories and reasons certain things are happening will be revealed over time - but the show makes it a point to tell you the barebones of the story from the get go. I think that's probably the flaw with large watch parties, though. Hard to pay attention and absorb details when there's conversations and people shifting around you.

THE STORY: The world is divided into four parts: the Fire Nation, Earth Kingdom, Water Tribes, and Air Nation. The Avatar, master of all four elements is the symbol of peace and prosperity in this world - until he vanished 100 years ago. At the same time, the Fire Nation attacked the other three kingdoms, sending the world into a hundred year conflict without the Avatar to put an end to it. But the Avatar is back - and its the duty of the Avatar to restore peace and balance. Aang will have to defeat the Fire Nation and bring an end to this long war to restore the world. But he's young and not ready - he only knows Air bending and has little to no control over the Avatar State. So, he needs to find bending masters to train him so he can fight and fulfill the important role of the Avatar.

Book 1, Episode 5: There is 100% a story. They are bringing Aang to the North Pole to learn waterbending so they could eventually stop the war and bring balance to the world. So there is a fan theory that Bumi was testing to see if Aang had learned all of the elements. The first challenge could’ve easily been solved with waterbending, for the second challenge you have to be stubborn like an earthbender, and the third challenge is clearly modelled after an agni kai, that firebending duel from episode 3.

Book 1, Episode 6: As far as I'm aware, George Takei is one of only three people who acts in the original Avatar and will also appear in the Netflix Live Action. In the live action, Takei is playing a character named Koh. The other two are the guy who voices the Cabbage Man and Daniel Dae Kim who plays a general in Book 2 of the animated but is playing Ozai in the live action. The dad is played by Kevin Michael Richardson. He's a voice actor who's been in everything.
