I love that Zuko finally has friends, and the first thing he does is tell them about how great his Uncle is.

It’s funny how a Nickelodeon show writes female characters better than alot of movies and shows of today

Remember Azula in season 2 when they were disguised as Kyoshi Warriors said “It's terrible when you can't trust the people who are closest to you.” If you notice Mai and Ty Lee looked at each other after that line

that final scene with Mai, Ty Lee and Azula always gives me goosebumps

Suki is a badass that doesn't get talked about enough.

I LOVE how Mai was ready to GO--win or lose, she was ready for that face-off with Azula.

Azula clearly did not expect that any of her friends would ever escape her control. She is used to everything being under control, including herself. This is the first time Azula loses her temper.

The climax of this ep is that "I love Zuko more than I fear you" sequence 😈

And this was the start of Azula's descent into madness. Absolutely nobody was on her side and she became a perfect mirror image of Ozai

"I love Zuko more than I fear you"
that scene was SO important to me as a child, it showed me that I don't need to please toxic people, and Ty Lee taking Azula down was just the push I needed to break free.

What I love about the "that's rough buddy" line is that Zuko genuinely has no idea what to say, and that beat before he speaks it looks like he's processing it. "Did he just say his ex girlfriend is the moon? Does this guy think he was dating a celestial body? Oh crap, I still haven't said anything, I better talk..." "...that's rough buddy"

The boiling rock episodes had so many good moments! From Zuko and Sokka rescuing Suki and his dad to Mai and Ty Lee betraying Azula, it was satisfying to see!😁

One very tiny detail with Zuko:
Until he met the Sun Warriors, Zuko always grunted when he was firebending.
After meeting the Sun Warriors, he completely stopped grunting. As if he was no longer using angst and frustration to fuel the fire anymore.

A slightly larger detail with Mai: She expresses way more emotion after the Beach and she is actually more emboldened around Zuko and Azula than she was before .

Also note that The only reason Mai seems like the weaker of Team Azula is that Nickelodeon wouldn't let her kill people--Imagine if she was always going for headshots with her accuracy: the show would have been over in season 2.

I know a good portion of the fandom rally behind Zuko and Katara, but Mai and Zuko are amazing together and the perfect pairing for me. One of the few times in animation where the redeemed bad guy ends up with a girl like Mai, someone who isn't the typical "good girl MC from the rival nation". The dynamics of their relationship is so cool to see on a "children's show". I love the GrumpyxSunshine trope, but not so much when it's like "Your family killed my family and you've hurt me a few times but I'm in love with you" 😶

Jack saying The Ember Island Players is the worst episode is a bad take, my reaction was the same as Carter's. 😆 Your reactions to these two episodes did not disappoint! I can't wait for your reactions to the last stretch of episodes.

This is one of my all time favorite episodes! It has so many iconic lines/moments. Like it has "That's rough buddy" and "I love Zuko more than I fear you" I mean come on! And it has such cool fight scenes, shows the fantastic character growth and sheer strength of Zuko, Sokka, Mai, Ty Lee, and Suki, has the beginnings of Azula's downfall, has the Zuko/Mai and Sokka/Suki love stories, and is just so well paced and well done!

I do think her friends loved her at some point, they wouldn’t have stuck around for so long if they didn’t. She is a psycho. And they would fear her too much to hang out with her. It’s because they love d and respected her that they tolerated her. They fear her enough just to not get in her way and that’s where azula miscalculated. Fear makes you cautious while love makes you brave. At least that’s how I interpreted the “I love zuko more than I fear you.”
Another point is that Azula doesn’t care for love. She wouldn’t have flinched if Mai had say “than I love you, ” I can actually see her laughing at that. But to hear that someone doesn’t fear her, specially someone who has seen everything she is capable of, it’s maddening. And all this time, it wasn’t that Mai feared her so much she couldn’t do anything, she just didn’t love anything enough to bother.

One of the best betrayals on a cartoon, definitely. I'm glad Ty Lee intervened because Azulas was about to shot a fucking lighting bolt to Mei...

Mai telling Azula that she loves Zuko more than she fears her is kind of similar with her and Azula’s and Zuko’s mother.
