I think the biggest takeaway is we all need balance. You don’t have to buy everything that is put out there, but you also shouldn’t feel bad for enjoying the products you like.

This is one of the reasons I adore minis. I feel like I can actually use the product before it goes bad.

Tiktok feels almost like an infomercial for products, which makes me not want to buy stuff from there.

Ok but for real. I still use my expired makeup products. I'd throw out if I noticed a change in texture, smell but.... 😅

I do think this 12 to 24 months expiry for eye shadow palettes is ridiculous! I have so much makeup that I might not touch a palette for that long. I agree that liquids and especially mascara should be tossed more frequently. Since they put a year expiration date on EVERYTHING nowadays probably to cover themselves legally, that seems to scare people into unnecessary repurchases.
Tips to go by is if it looks off, smells off or no longer works, or is walking on its own, toss it. 👍🏼😂

Shopping addict here. Embarrassing to admit that I am in credit card debt because of it too. I’ve finally deleted all social media apps except YouTube to limit ads, I deleted all my shopping apps too like Etsy, Amazon, target etc…I’ve paid off a couple thousand the last few months so I’m finally feeling less anxious. It’s still so tough to keep myself from impulse buying though.

I wish brands sold more travel size products and smaller size products for people who don’t use tons of makeup.

Edit: 😲wow, thanks for all the likes!😊

I think a lot of people still haven't fully connected the dots on the fact that an influencer's collection of makeup (or clothing, etc) is used for work. We don't hire a carpenter and then go out and buy one of every tool we saw them use. We don't watch a TV show about the restaurant industry and think, "An industrial fryer is EXACTLY what my home kitchen needs!" I don't want to emulate an influencer's huge collection, but I DO want to benefit from it by listening to someone make comparisons between shades and across product lines.

It's okay to throw things out, especially if you've hardly used it and it's been there for years.

I’ve always had an issue with how influencers have used the term “over consumption”.

When you have 60 foundations and you continue to buy 1 every month - that’s not over consumption. That’s compulsive spending.

The more I see videos about tiktok trends, the more I feel so glad about having never downloaded the app or looked for content from it.😅.

I developed my obsession with beautiful nail polish from scratch.😂🤣😂

Honestly, let’s just live within our means—whatever that looks like for us, individually.🤷🏾‍♀️

I am absolutely a shopping addict. It’s taken me time to accept it but I used to do beauty- found myself in that declutter and acquire cycle. I’ve had to stop watching everyone who does them which is unfortunate because I love a lot of creators who review stuff as they declutter. But it absolutely triggers me to try new things, buy new things. It’s so sad, but I think most beauty content is just glorified shopping addiction. The death of real makeup tutorials also makes me sad. It’s so saturated, but also I know for a fact the algorithms DONT push them anymore. It sucks.

I started buying travel size ! For example mascara is supposed to be changed every 6 months so I get the small size and I’m fine !

11:42 Robert mentions not buying things you don’t need- but for me personally I can’t look at it that way, because makeup is always a joy for me, not a need. I don’t need it, I want it and that’s ok. Not sure anyone will even see this comment- but if anyone else was getting hung up there- know that it’s okay to sometimes buy things because they bring you joy. I live pretty minimally but I still find space / funds for makeup on occasion. Just don’t over do it…ok 😊

I truly appreciate Robert's (and James's!) content so much because they mix their areas of expertise with a healthy dose of media literacy. Come for the makeup tips, stay for a crash course on critical thinking.

i wanted to highlight robert's dedication to accessibility here. i'm so happy that you continue to have bespoke subtitles, when next to nobody else bothers with any or simply relies on the flawed google autocaptions. as a person with hearing problems, thank you so so much.

I do prefer this to overconsumption but I am tired of seeing everything be trends. Hopefully this means people wont consume more(I doubt it), but it feels like everything has to be done for attention

Overconsumption for attention. Under consumption for attention. Like they cant just live and do things for themselves.

I very much prefer this to overconsumption though, regardless of why it's being done.

my dermatologist told me companies put expiration dates 2 years before they actually expire, for legal reasons just to be safe. it makes sense, theres no way powder blush/eyeshadow/etc goes bad after 12 months lol (i dont play w mascara and liquid eyeliner tho)

It takes me so long to get through a blush that everytime its time to repurchase what I had has been discontinued...

This underconsumption core takes me back to 2010's minimalist videos. While some people were normal about it, there were videos where I, person with depression, could tell that the people in them weren't at the top of their mental health.
