I was trained as a psychotherapist at a very prestigious university. Concurrently, I received quite extensive psychotherapy. As a result, I could understand, intellectually, how to "cope". It was helpful, in a practical sense. But I was still missing peace. Only after I converted to Orthodoxy did I find peace. Glory to God.

I’m a therapist and I agree. Those who don’t want any spiritual counseling I still try to help as best I can (and plant theological seeds that I pray will sprout at some point) but I’m convinced that pain without purpose will remain just that... pain without purpose.

That really hits home. I’ve been through western counseling, and it didn’t do anything for me. It didn’t help me understand the true roots of my suffering- which was/is ultimately my separation from God, my lack of understanding of His Holy Spirit, and not truly repenting of my sins. My eyes are opening. Pray for me.

"Western psychology doesn't understand the metaphysics of the will..." That's so savage, so powerful and so true.

Lots of therapists enable people to continue in their self-love and entitlement, and I've never seen it help anybody

glory in our suffering. The closest I ever got to God was in my most difficult time. That's where the growth comes from. That's where the deep connection and commitment to God comes from. Ask Paul on his way to Damascus what a God encounter feels like. when you run out of options. When you're at the end of your rope. God is the only thing left. And what a beautiful feeling it is. And glory be to God for his grace and love.

There are no other teachings that even come close to the Orthodox Church, because its the life and the way and the truth to Lord Jesus Christ.

Psychology does not know what a healthy person looks like so how can they get us there? I've been through a LOT of counseling. It helped some, but when God healed, iT was INCREDIBLE!

Good timing I was actually considering going to see a therapist for my stress and anxiety but have been thinking maybe I should just go see my local monastery and this video has helped me confirm that decision. Thank you Father.

I think good therapy is like good medicine. I wish there was more of a concession in this little snippet about that. Good therapy helps a man go inward and know himself better, see the parts that are struggling to take over his whole system, understand how and why his brain does what it does. I think this helps when bringing the whole self to Christ. One can cry out with greater understanding of his needs, with a deeper sense of his pain, and with a greater ability to bring the broken psyche to God, whereas before that may not have been possible. I think as long as both work together (therapy exposing the roots and wounds within and Christ healing them) then it can all be good and used by God. I have found my therapist and my spiritual father working together very well, with each one encouraging me to keep seeing and working with the other.

Amen, and I hate having to argue this with other Orthodox Christians who have never suffered through a psychology before.

That was excellent! Very deep and makes perfect sense. I also do believe psychology and psychiatry for the professionals themselves I should say… are given to us by God and part of the whole thing. However, everything he is saying makes complete sense.

With humility (I hope) I consider myself an expert on the topic. After calling out to Jesus three years ago( I am Orthodox) to heal me from a lifetime of misery, He did, and still is. The ‘medicine’ entailed a form of pure torture, that’s how it felt, and still does at times. This experience opened my eyes and I realised how (spiritually) blind and dead I was. This period of my life was really tough and it took faith in God to endure. A faith that was strengthened along the way. I’ve noticed that I now have gifts and traits I didn’t have when I began this journey such as resilience. It’s been a really difficult journey though highly miraculous.

There is no meaning to suffering without God, and without Christ you may find other “spiritual” paths such as new age stuff that will only turn you into a calm, self-centered monster. Glad I was saved from that. Glory to God!

I have been addicted to pornography since I was seven years old. I am 48 now. I have spent thousands of dollars on psychologist, psychiatrist, therapist and some number of years in 12 step recovery. These things were helpful but none of them cured me. So they prescribe meds to help with your ADD and depression or anxiety. None of these things helped me stop. I've been an inquirer for 8 months now. I go to Matins 2 times a week on avg., do prostrations, pray more than ever, goto Liturgy, read the holy scriptures daily, and listen to AFR music all day everyday. I by the grace of God don't have the desire to look at porn. I'm even off those meds. My faith has made me whole. I've experienced miracles....the smell of the incense from the matins at my home. I really believe God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost really love me and they might actually smile when they see me. Beautiful is the only thing I can say.
