My favorite Fermi paradox solution is the one involving phosphorus. Our solar system was produced late enough to have sufficient phosphorus for life to thrive. No phosphorus or not enough anyway, no life. So any civ developing would be concurrent to ours and we couldn't see them...yet.

Montu, I started watching your stellaris content about a year ago as I was getting more into the game. I loved your matter-of-fact way of describing the nuances of the game and found your explanations incredibly useful in learning more about all the content I could explore. One of the reasons I got into stellaris was because of concepts like this, the mystery behind alien life in the universe, and the question of "are we really alone in the vast expanse of time and space". Stellaris makes me feel ever closer to those answers, no matter how out of reach they are in reality, as I pave my own way through the depths of the galaxy. Keep up the awesome content and your commitment to your viewers, and congratulations on the new full time YouTuber status. It'd be great to see more videos like this!

For me it doesnt matter if we are alone or not, both ideas are equally scary and interesting.

I really love the idea that other Aliens Races would have a rocky history just like Humanity’s very own rocky history. It gives a scenes of relief knowing that your race ain’t the only one with internal problems, and it’s that very aspect that gives stimulation to the wonder we tend to called life. 🙂

The simple solution to the Fermi Paradox. "Yes. We are alone."

Personally I don't think us being sapient is the deciding factor. More important as far as I see it is the bodies with which our sapience exists within.

I think it is entirely likely that while we aren't the 1st sapient species in our galaxy, we very well might be the 1st sapient species that has tool making bodies that can make use of our intellect.

Think of dolphins, octopi, crows and ravens. All of these species are highly intelligent and show great problem solving skills. Some may even be considered on par with humans, or at least homo-erectus.

And then we have ants which can create vast sophisticated societies. Imagine if ants had thumbs and fingers.

And then think of apes and chimps, they have the bodies, but the intellect is lacking when it comes to making advanced use of their bodies.

So, I think sapient life is quite common in the universe. But whether the life is born into a body that can make use of advanced tools or not, is likely a major factor to play in the Fermi Paradox, taking a priority only behind species commonly evolving sapience on worlds shortly before catastrophic events (which are common in our universe).

You have this weird distinct power to make my day better. Thanks for explaining this PLUS your Stellaris videos! Also, check out theories like the "Great Filter Theory", freaky stuff

If you liked the concept of this game, you might like the books starting with The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin

This game seems fun, but holy Jesus whoever made this game does not understand just how insane the amount of resources a planet has. A slightly more advanced humanity from us wouldn't be able to drain a mere 10% of the natural deep ore mineral and metal veins within 1000s of years. Let alone everything in a mere 50. None of these exceptionally weak civilizations who haven't even begun the construction of mega structures, let alone even small habitat swarms, should be anywhere near capable of entirely depleting a planet of ore or resources.

Good stuff. Timelines, lore, all that good stuff.

Aside from the fermi paradox, isn't there a name for where the sheer distances involved in space might mean there are lots of alien life out there but on "islands" with more or less no hope of encountering each other.

Problem with this game is the diplomacy and foreign relation is still very basic, upon making contact either you can share technology and go your separate ways or just completely annihilate each other. No possibility of a galactic empire.
