For the bass layer, a saturator instead of the 1178 works great for me too. For that I often like Nembrini NA Lo-Fi, Tone Empire Locness (none of them "fancy" but I like the rawness) or recently Newfangled Saturate. And then filtering, of course. Thanks for sharing your recipes and how you hear stuff, Joe!

Wavesfactory Spectre is my go to for the trick Joe does with 1178, without the compression obviously. Select you band, Q and harmonic distortion type and sweep around till you find the sweet spot...
