Use spectrum analyzer for all its worth. Use headphones. Use the ”finger on the woofer” technique. Use a subpac. Dont overthink it. Dont overmix it.

I recently bought a pair of Sony MDR-7506's and I can mos def recommend! They are affordable and have a decent response curve.

Presonus Sceptre 8's with Sonarworks Reference 4 calibration to correct for my much less than perfect sounding room gives me the ability to really hear what I"m mixing. Since going to this setup my mixes have begun to really translate well to other systems...

Yeah, I find it hard to mix anything lower than about 50hz on my Kali LP6s, but my headphones provide some clarity to the low end. The only problem is I tend to mix sub bass by feeling just as much as hearing, which you can't get on headphones.

Warren, your videos are a Godsend. Thank you for making them. I've been following and putting your advice into practice and my mixes have improved. I recently processed a vocal track going step by step using your process with Rvox/Vocal Rider x2, etc... and it's the best sounding vocal track I've mixed to date. Thank you so much!

Edit: Using Sure SRH1840's

Sony MDR 7506s - I just realized on recent mix that I was hearing the low bass through headphones and not so much through my JBL 503 monitors. So Hourray for Headphones. The more I mix different project ( and listen to Warren) the more I improve.

I just got (last week) a pair of DT-990 Pro headphones. I am learning them. I mix mainly on NS10s, so i am using headphones a lot. Prior to the 990’s, i used (and still use) Presonus HD7 headphones. Last night, i put a LPF on my master bus at around 200hz and listened through and made some moves as well. First time I tried that.

I use music theory, span, visual of me cones & feel of my subwoofer cones. I also keep a close eye on my correlation meter for working with stereo bass & mixing in mono bass.

I use Beyerdynamics DT 990 Pro, though I recently also got a subwoofer monitor to be able to work with subbass without having to run to my car to verify every mix decision. Interestingly enough, unlike their home stereo brethren, the studio subwoofers can sound very natural and almost transparent. Though I haven't used it for a full mix yet. Do you have any opinions about working with subs in the studio?

I use SPAN to see the mix and Subpac with dt1990 pro to monitor

I rely as much on how the low end vibrates my body as I do what I hear from the monitors.

Buy a pair of flat headphones. Learn those headphones, learn how they sound, learn how they behave when listening to your favourite tracks.
When mixing, mimic that sound, mimic that balance...

Gotta breakout the headphones for that low end
