I know a Bulgarian guy who used to serve in the navy during the cold war.
He's told me stories of trading AK74u's for alcohol i forget the name of.
He always loved rock music but couldn't openly listen to it because it was illegal to even own western music in Bulgaria at the time.
He also remembers being a kid when Chernobyl happened, they cancelled the national holiday because of it, they weren't allowed to leave their homes.

There are some things you really really don't F with. The gas mask being one of those things.
Imagine how fucked up things are going to get when we get into space!?
As to messing up. Either they messed up by not properly instructing their draftees. Or they didn't instruct them properly on purpose to use the "victim" as a cautionary example for the rest of the trainees.
Anyway this dude is equally culpable in my eyes. Stupid is as stupid does.

The valve is available to remove in order to breathe easier like he said, but he had it off when the attack happened so he did not know at the time of what happened and now I see people blaming him, but he just tried to help himself breathe during an attack without knowing it was an attack
