How to Sew by Hand

A lot of my tutorials involve hand sewing, so had a request from "Ron" to do a tutorial on how to sew by hand. So here are the basics of hand sewing for those who have never done it. Not only does it come in handy when your sewing machine is on the fritz, it's also a lot more relaxing way to sew if you have the time. And it's great for those places that are hard to reach with a sewing machine. There are other ways to hand sew as well, this is just a tutorial for how I do it. A lot of people like to use the backstitch to cover a seamline, but I prefer to just do a double running stitch as I demonstrate in the how-to, that way if one thread breaks, there still a second one to hold everything together.

A 6 year old video and it’s still helping people, thanks a lot! I’m wanting to start making my own plushies and there’s a different sewing technique I saw for that but this one is turning out WAY better and cleaner, so again, thank you!!

So, I am a man, I haven't sewn a thing (correctly) in my life. This was so easy to follow and presented in a manner that leads for easy recollection. I don't think I could forget now that I have seen this video and I have no doubt that this should help others in the future. Skills like these never get old or out of fashion. In time, we may lose it all, but, with these skills or memories we can still have clothing to wear and pockets to keep our sewing kit in!

I've been knowingly sewing wrong for my entire life and I could have so easily fixed it by just watching a 6 minute video. Lol thank you that was incredibly informative

I cannot express my thanks! I'm 16 and my dog had previously chewed a hole in my comforter, my parents being as busy as they are either forgot or couldn't sew it up for me, it wasn't a problem until it got dirty just now and needed a wash, I didn't want the stuffing to fall out so I looked up "how to sew" and your video popped up, hopefully my patch job holds up in the wash! I also found sewing weirdly cathartic and fun, so when I'm in my 70s I'll have something to do!

I taught myself how to sew and I thought it was about time I learned properly and it turns out how I've been sewing is the way you just showed. However that beginning trick with putting the thread through the loop before the knot is genius and I will be doing that from now on so thank you. Also this is a wonderful tutorial that is very easy to follow for beginners so keep it up :)

Hold up I didn't even know that you had to make the knot at the start and the end, thank you so much for this!

8 year old video and still helping people like me. First time I sewed something in my life. Managed to fix a torn seam in an expensive (polartec alpha) hiking fleece. I'm super pleased since you don't even see it from the outside. Thank you!
