I've had my Fiat 500L for 3 years now, no problems at all. I know a few people who have them and only one had an issue and it was with the hands free talk. Also, research Consumer Reports, they get their data from and outside "independent source" which means there's "totally no way money is involved"

A problem with a 'quality' report referencing Consumer Reports is that the results are often flawed. Consumers bases its statistics on overall complaints - regardless of the cause. For example, when owners report frustration with things like a clumsy nav system, poor stereo quality or difficulty connecting BlueTooth, they are recorded as 'quality' flaws. Consumers doesn't specifically highlight the issues that MOST people consider 'good quality, ' like trouble-free power-train operation, well-fitted/rattle-free dash pieces and infrequent/cheap maintenance.

Yugo was OK. Not the best, but not the worst.
You can´t buy a BMW like car for $3999.

...it is sad to see this.
On the list are cars that aren't even in same category. I'd be much more disappointed if I'd pay 50-80k for a vehicle that has problems. Fiat 500L is 8k worth new... what do you expect from that vehicle?
And as many said, people need to learn to drive manual shift cars.

P.S.: ...I live in Serbia, and I never heard anyone complaining about old Yugo, even today, it is pretty reliable vehicle, and even if something is fault, repairs are in range of 20-50$. Really sad to compare these vehicles at all...

I have a 1986 Yugo GV. The car is registered under my name since 1999 and I never had any problems with it. All the parts are original (except your usual tune up parts) and I get plenty of attention with it from people wanting to take pictures of the car, while talking about classic and rare automobiles throughout history!

Contrary to popular belief, the Yugo never went out of business! In the United States, the car lasted from 1985-1993 and the last consumer purchasing year was 1991. Yugo America left the U.S. not because of bad sales, but due to the embargo that was placed on Yugoslavia during their civil war in the mid-late 1990's. In 1999, NATO bomb half of the factory, but were able to rebuilt the building and continue on manufacturing the cars!

Did you know in the UK, the Yugo was voted one of the best cars ever made and the Zastava factory (which made the Yugo) won many awards! Yugo-mania seized the United States and lines actually formed at dealerships to purchase the car. At one point, Chrysler even offered to buy the company. The Yugo actually became the “fastest-selling first-year European import in US history.” In Serbia, Zastava continued to make the Yugo all the way up to 2008 and now the manufacturer makes Fiat's (which they made at one time). Many in Serbia and former Yugoslavian states have been customizing them for street racing and rally events for competition. The Fiat 500L that are being imported to the United States is currently manufactured in the same car plant that made the Yugo in Serbia.

So don't listen to a pencil neck geek reporter that has no idea about it, never driven one, and can only gave a few sentences about the car without giving you a rational look at it. As a Yugo owner, its a great little automobile that has a cult following on the Yahoo Groups and have access to parts, memorabilia, and give the proper wisdom on these little cars of history!

Wow! This is so subjective. For everyone saying they've had so many problems with brand "X" you will find an equal amount saying they haven't had any. What some find as problems, others don't mind. I get it, but what I refuse to accept is someone's opinion based on what they read in a magazine or newspaper. Unless you have personal experience, then you are just repeating someone else's opinion.

This guy looks like he's never once changed a tire let alone do any mechanical work. Go to Serbia you will see tons of yugos still running strong with orignal engines and transmissions.

Yugo is not unreliable, mine is 30 years old with god knows how many miles and still runs like a champ with no issues.

This is why Japanese cars have soared due to their quality build. And NO, the Nissan Pathfinder is not made in Japan, it's made in Tennessee! All 3 of my cars and my sport bike were actually 100% built in Japan and have lasted years with only regular maintenance issues.
