Does Kung Fu Actually Work in a Street Fight/MMA?

There are a lot of skeptics who say Kung Fu doesn't work in a street fight. Since it is not widely used in MMA like Muay Thai and BJJ, many think it lacks practicality in a fist fight. Our guest Ando breaks down a Kung Fu side hammer fist punch combo and talks about why it DOES work in a street self defense situation.

he is kinda right. early 2000s mma, spinning back kicks were considered impractical. but now mma fighters are knocking people out with them.

I am a kung-fu practioner and my favorite quote would be kung-fu has the deepest well but the leakiest bucket, it's up to the artist to hand pick the techniques he wants to master and apply and then they will be practical and devastating.

Considering that street fights often last less than a minute, I'd say that confidence, power and aggression is what matters most. The 'style' is of secondary importance.

This technique works wonders! Recently added to my sparring and the confusion from the side hammer catches my opponents off guard because it’s different from a regular cross, jab. Great video!

"In the next five years in MMA..." oof, that comment didn't age well. Sorry Sensei Ando.

Any martial art works in a street fight. As long as you've done some kind of sparring, which they don't do in karate dojos or kung fu training (at least not where I live). Boxing, MMA and Muay thai is very different in that aspect, because you're always fighting someone that will punch you back unless you learn to block and avoid.
So the problem isn't in the art itself, but in the way you learn it.

I was a specialist of biomechanics for 10 years, and also involved in martial arts research. The reason it's martial "art", and not science, is because there are numerous factors involved that determine the outcome of a fight. First is probably size; a bigger and stronger fighter generally wins. Next is the determination and will to win; who's willing to fight harder, be more aggressive, and willing to take more hits from the opponent.

Somewhere in the mix is "skill and familiarity" - or how familiar a fighter is with the hand-eye and hand-foot coordination specific to a given fight. There's also speed, or how quickly a muscle group can articulate messages sent from the brain at the neuro-muscular junction (something I worked with a lot). Neurologically speaking, speed is actually considered as a different kind of strength.

When all the other factors are added up (there are many more, I've only named a few), the choice of style (kung fu, karate, krav maga, etc) is left largely irrelevant. A big, strong, mean, vicious, and highly skilled boxer who wants to win badly, will absolutely clobber a smaller, weaker, and less dedicated Brazilian Jujitsu who's only fighting half-heartedly. Switch those other factors around, and you'll effectively switch the outcome.

Pretty sure people thought Spinning Backfists, Spin Back Kick/Sidekick, and Spinning Hook Kicks were BS too. Now it's not surprising to see people add it to their arsenal.

How about a sparring example of it in action instead of hypotheticals? I just like seeing things like this put into action after they're explained.

I started learning Kung Fu when I was about 7 (Now 26). It has saved my life so often. It absolutely works :)

The entire issue with techniques or styles that don't work comes from those styles not being taught in a practical way
