Why Silat is effective in a street fight

It will be really hard to exhaust all the martial arts out there that will be perfect for a street fight. Another one we would like to consider is the Indonesian martial art known as Silat, which means combat or fighting, which is now generally referred to as Pencak Silat can be easily confused with other branches of martial art such as Karate and Kung Fu.

But unlike the traditional martial arts that we know, Silat is a lot less popular, but regardless of how unpopular it may be in the world of martial arts and self-defense, it has to be given the accolade of having the most brutal hits.

Many people who aren't quite familiar with this art have this misconception that Pencak Silat puts a lot of focus on weapon combat than it does on unarmed combat. But that is just an opinion of the vast minority who know little to nothing about the art.

Well, in today's video, we will be looking at how effective Pencak Silat is effective in the streetfight for self-defense and all you need to know about it. And if you wish to start training in Silat or you haven't considered it at all, why don't you stick around till the end of the video. Let's get into it.

The last time when I was in Indonesia, I saw their local news reporting that a young man had defended himself with his martial arts (Silat) skills and had killed 😳 one of the 2 armed bandits who wanted to take his motorcycle. the news reporter said that the local police did not arrest this young man but awarded him a charter.

Silat is an underexposed martial arts due to how dangerous it can be. Medieval period in Nusantara (Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore & Philippines) was a little bit different than most countries.

War was treated differently in Nusantara, in which I mean, normally when you think of medieval wars, most likely you would think of an open battlefield where both sides duke it out. However Nusantara was different, war was all about assassination here, that's why the countries in Nusantara doesn't really have much fancy traditional weapons like China or Japan, our traditional weapons are small because the medieval fighters of Nusantara have always been fighting as assassins rather than warriors. They usually fight in the forest trying to ambush each other, so small weapons is always preferable, and that was the background for Silat's development. Silat is a martial arts that aim to turn your entire body into a weapon, and make every hits the killing blow. It aims for your vital points to take you out as quickly and efficiently as possible, after all again, it's a technique used by Nusantara assassins, and now is used by the special forces from Nusantara countries

That's why in today's MMA competitions, we almost never see anyone using Silat techniques. Because yes, they're pretty much banned to be used in sports competitions for being too lethal and dangerous, which is understandable tbh, even here in it's land of origin, Nusantara, Silat techniques needs to be put under heavy restrictions in any competitions featuring it

Most silat training is live action role playing against compliant opponents. I trained extensively all throughout Indonesia between 1974 and 1982 - culminating in taking Gold at the inaugural World Silat Championships in Jakarta. The only athletes that made it past the first round, were one that did bagwork, roadwork and daily sparring - the rest were wiped out with little to no ceremony.

Some forms of silat are so brutal it's illegal to practice. There are types of silat that focuses on hits that can be extremely lethal

That's why, back in the day, when I joined the Merpati Putih silat Dojo, it was not allowed for sports fighting... We once had a friendly match with karate, and we were confused because my coach prohibited us from striking using breathing techniques. Their strikes, as they were used to training their muscles rigorously, were very powerful, and we couldn't do anything since we were accustomed to training strikes with breathing techniques.

Because I didn't want to become a punching bag with continuous kicks, I decided to strike using the breathing technique just once. It turned out that my strike indeed caused my opponent to faint, which frightened me, and I received a punishment from the coach of 50 push-ups. Fortunately, my opponent recovered without having to be taken to the hospital... despite my immense fear. I was just a 13-year-old kid at that time.

Pencak Silat is the umbrella term for all styles of silat in Indonesia. One of the style is Silat Harimau (Tiger Silat from Minangkabau tribe) in West Sumatera. You can see it in Merantau. The first film of Iko Uwais. Yayan Ruhian also in there. The other style is Silat Betawi. This is the original silat style of Iko Uwais. He is from Tiga Berantai, Jakarta. A silat school founded by his Grandfather. Another style is Silat Sunda. This is the original style of Cecep Arif Rahman. His silat school is Panglipur. Yayan Ruhian also has his own silat school. There are many other styles of silat in Indonesia. But I don't really know in detail. Silat became popular in the world after the success of The Raid films.

The greatest skill anyone can learn is the ability to run damned fast in the opposite direction.

The original Indonesian silat is a martial art that relies on speed and agility, the focus of the silat movement is to aim for the vital point. A fighter in the past used a gambit, dagger, machete to quickly eliminate the enemy.

Many martial artists would describe Silat as pure violence, it is extremely fast and efficient. The basic idea is that you are hitting a soft part of your opponent's body with a hard part of your body. It is very focused on self-defense and although the sport form of it has rules, the applied part does not. I find it to be kind of like a combination of Muay Thai and Arnis, it is very similar to Filipino martial arts and yes, does require a serious investment of time. Real lineage holding teachers of Silat are not very common in the US.

I love Silat, but in our area, we don't have access to learn it. On the contrary, the Boxing gyms are everywhere.Hope the Silat will be popularized as soon as possible.

Unlike karate or taekwondo which was used for sport, pencak silat is fully used for combat. Most of the trainers here in Indonesia teach techniques that could be used to kill. they teach them to their disciple until they mastered it and can control how to execute it without killing their opponent. The most similar martial art would be thai kick boxing but silat also teach grapple and weapon combat. Even the special force here in Indonesia is taught silat.

I've been practicing Silat since I was a kid and trained in several style. My issue with Silat is if you love in a war torn area or where lives a re cheap then Silat is very very effective. But if you live in a relatively peace an law full environment then it's a bit hard. Because I have to beat my opponent without inflict a huge fatal damage. Our style of training made us instinctly resort to the easiest but at the same time most brutal technique. And it's very hard to soften or change that instinct. Once in a weapon spar I hit my partner eyes, luckily it was paded weapon but still it sucks and i really feel sorry. People says all the time they want to learn deadly technique and stuffs, but seriously, it sucks when it's already grinded inside you and you (me in this case) have anger management issue

Dude my dad is a Silat master, Cimande style and it’s old school. I learned kyokushin, boxing and bjj. Silat have all of it, punches, kicks, joint lock, even it teaches you to use weapon like machete, dagger, even a sarong. A sarong literally a fabric you use for praying for Muslim men. This martial art type are just straight forward, punch and kick you in the nuts, poke your eyes, almost anything. They doesn’t hesitate to target your groin. Back when Indonesia idk medieval era or something, Silat was the last resort for kill your assailant from another kingdom or common bandit. I think most of Silat styles are still old school there are some modernised style for sport but mostly you only find the old school style in the villages far from city or in pesatren, islamic school.

Very good information,
Nusantara had 6 brothers :
Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand . Same martial arts but different calling and patterns . I didn't like people who said we are not same, if we're not same why we understand each other languages and same skins? We fell apart after colonize era .

Like Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Mongolian . Like Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and all of that . Same but different .

In Indonesia they call Pencak Silat, in Malaysia they call Seni Silat . I don't know what other 4 brother's country named Silat .

The narrator is very very true on silat being so slow to learn. I learned silat for 2 years all i had was 1 "bunga" and the rest was just strengthening and conditioning. No disrespect to silat i just didn't have the patience. I learned taekwondo at about the same period i already had 2 bronze medal in a tournament lol. But at the peak of it silat is surely very deadly
