Replacing Fuel Line on Poulan Chainsaw 2055LE

How to replace the fuel line on a Poulan 2055LE chainsaw. My saw would not stay running, was starving for fuel and eventually would not pull any fuel into the primer bulb. After checking the fuel line in the tank, I saw the fuel filter was disconnected from the line. As I grabbed the fuel line in the tank it crumbled right in my hands. Here I bring you with me as I try to figure out how to feed the line back through into the tank, then see if it runs normally again!

Update: in the video I struggle with the line because it was definitely too big. Here are the line sizes someone commented: 9/64 OD x 5/64 ID and 3/16 OD x 3/32 ID.

I finally found a local place that had the right sized smaller dia. fuel line I needed. I got one saw back together earlier today. After some tweaking of the idle and 2 mixture screws, i was able to get it back working very well again. I started by backing out the L/H mixture screws about 1 1/2 turns ea. and went from there.

Tip
If you sharpen (make a long skinny point) on one end of replacement line & feed that pointed end down into the hole in the tank, it will go into the holes fairly easily. A pair of long bent nosed forceps works very well too over long nosed pliers, as it can clamp & hold onto the line easier.
After I started the lines into the holes, I gave the lines a quick shot of silicone spray to help lube the lines & they went into the holes even easier then.

Oh
I found that supposedly the smaller dia. (supply) line from the tank (with the filter) is that way to help the primer bulb have a bit more suction as it draws fuel up from the filter & into the carb.

Warning:
Some "shady" types are selling clear replacement tubing online (ebay) that is absolutely not meant for gas or gas/ethanol) at all. I went with local sources to help avoid getting the wrong stuff. I'm using the yellow Tygon product for both the replacement fuel lines.

I see you used clear, which may, or may not be safe in the long run, esp depending on where you got it and if it's actually really designed for use with gas/ethanol. Tygon also makes a lesser known clear version, hope you got a safe version of your line.

Hats off to Vintage for all of his patience. Had the same Poulan saw, for me the choice was easy. Sent Poulan off to scrap recycle, got me a Stihl (which I only half hate).

I drilled out the hole to match the diameter for the fuel line for a snug fit-works good. Everyone will get a different size fuel line, so better off drilling to match the size . I got a tune-up kit because the primer bulb got hard and cracked. Included air filter, sparkplug, 2 different size fuel line, and primer bulb. real cheap!! I suggest to replace ALL the lines, not just the fuel pick-up

As others have pointed out, there are two different size fuel lines. You have it reversed and lost a knuckle in the process. The skinny line goes in the hole you used. The far side hole is larger and would have worked better. Still a pain. The primer bulb has two different size nipples. The larger is labeled TANK and is more centered than the other labeled CARB which is closer to the screw hole.

The filter goes on the small diameter line on the hole closest to the filler cap. The return line (larger) dia. hose goes to the farthest hole from fuel filler cap and had a small union fitting inside to prevent pulling it out. . The lines to carb depend on the model so right and left won’t help. The diameter of the fittings on the carb MAY match. Generally the top is feed and the lower the return to the tank. The primer assembly is past the carb. If you prime and see fuel squirting in the carb...it’s wrong. I have a Poulan 2150 woodsman. The top came from the tank, the bottom to the primer bulb. Thanks for the video. Glad it worked when done. Never let machines win!

I ordered a kit on eBay for my Poulan 2055 LE which had two fuel hoses ( one larger one and one smaller one), one air filter and a primer bulb. I cut the fuel lines with a razor knife on an angle the worked them into the holes with an awl. I sprayed the hoses with silicone spray before I started the hoses into the holes. I then reached into the gas tank with long needle nose pliers and pull the hoses thru. I suggest doing the larger hose first when installing them. The smaller hose gets in the way when reaching in the gas tank for the larger one. Good video and thanks for the informative instructions.

I used you technique BUT added a little twist. I heated the line up a bit with my wife’s hair blower (don’t tell her). It made the line just enough more ply able and went through the hole very easy.

I couldn't get the line through the tank either I tried cutting it like you did and it worked like a charm thank you very much

Thanks a lot for that tutorial. Especially the mistakes. I do shit like that all the time so it’s good to see I am not alone. This was one of the better YouTube university videos due to the your struggles with the fuel line!

Thank you Vintage Wood workshop, I had just replaced all the fuel lines in my 1998 Model 2055, your video was huge help! Fishing line took 3 tries but a great tip!

Hey man, I just did this and what I did is drill out that hole that goes into the fuel tank just a little bit smaller than the diameter of the fuel line. Saves alot of trouble.

thank you for this video. it was a great help. i had a hard time with the hose because the replacement kit only came with one size hose not two. had to modify one hole for the line from the carb to tank. wound up using a lot of bad language but got the job done. it runs great again.

Glad you found right size. Next step if rt size not found would be to drill next size up to match new size tube.

I just got finished in doing what you did with a larger fuil line. I found a drill bit the size of the return hole than drilled out the filter line hole out and trimmed the gasoline line, feed it through, attaching a filter....done....BR549...may God bless all

Dude thanks this video helped a lot because I have a small one that’s abandoned but it’s just the engine and I’m putting it on this little bike to sell to work up for a bicycle that I’m turning in the dirt bike

Good observation and troubleshooting. My little Poulan does the same thing. I'll pick up some new fuel line for it soon. Thanks!

I've had this chainsaw sitting around unused for about 4 years now. It stopped working because of no priming. Didn't ever bother to look into it since I have a good running Stihl. Accidentally came across this video and now I know what I will be fixing this weekend. Thanks for the video. By the way, I am pretty sure all 10 of my knuckles have experienced the same trauma as yours did. It's what men do, bark their knuckles trying to wrangle something where it doesn't want to go. :)
