The European Commission has threatened to slap duties on some of America's best-known products in response to US plans to increase tariffs on aluminium and steel imports.

Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker says Harley Davidsons, bourbon, and Levi jeans all could be hit with a 25 percent tariff if US President Donald Trump follows through on his promise.

A list of countries like Canada, Mexico, China, Australia and Brazil have also vowed to retaliate.

Al Jazeera's Kimberly Halkett reports from Washington, DC.

We from Brazil will simply find another buyer for our steel at a better price. If not, steel will be more plentiful and therefore cheaper here in Brazil for our own

The big question is: are american companies and american workers ready to buy steel at a higher price due to a lower supply in their market?

It might be good for US local metal producers for now but if you look further its not that really great. Big countries also can put more tax on USA made products so it wont have much chance to compete with cheap products from other countries. All electronic products and clothes are all from Asia. Construction materials, dairy products, fruits, vegetables are imported to US. US cant supply any of them from its local producers. This is the trade war that US cant win. Just think about it this way. China puts 25% tax on all USA exports. (Since Trump called it trade war) So your iPhone your laptop your every day products are going to be 25% more expensive. There is no competition in the US local market. Almost 99% of Walmart items are all imported. Only corn fed beef and homogenized milk are from local producers. The USA exports are cars, plastic materials, oil, aircraft, machinery, wheat and meat. Trump only wants to protect his investment in metal industry.

Canada sends about 6 billion of steel export to USA and USA sends the same amount back to Canada. It would have been wise to exempt Canada but wise is not what the current government is.

If other coutries follow suit then at the end of the day all consumer products will become more expensive for the average people.

I like Pres Trump for a lot of reasons but when combined with the media and people ranting from the left or right political spectrum then it seems like the movie "Idiocracy" is already real.
