Business and political leaders in Canada say there will be pain if President-elect Donald Trump follows through on his pledge to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all Canadian goods, but they note the hurt will happen in his country as well.

"If you're going to be imposing tariffs on everything that goes back and forth across the borders, you're going to raise the price on the things that you're selling to your own consumers," Political science professor Max Cameron pointed out.

On Monday, Trump vowed to slap a 25 per cent tariff on all products coming from Canada and Mexico on his first day back in office.

Imagine licking the boots of the Americans for so long, hurting your economy in the process, and still getting tariffs :, D Bravo Canada.

Close the border. If you're in an abusive relationship you don't stay in the relationship. Blocking all traffic from and to the USA is the obvious choice.

and the US can do something about their illegal guns coming into Canada. Since when does Canada pay to protect Americans, they're responsible for their own borders.

Tariffs are a two-way street, they need Canadian imports as much as we need US imports. It would be a great time for the Federal Government to encourage ways to produce and sell Canadian products in Canada. Self-sufficiency should be a long-term goal.

Too bad business leaders aren't also historians. This will all end badly.

The average American voted for Trump's tariff plan without having the least clue that American companies who import goods from outside the USA are the ones who PAY the tariff, then pass the cost of the tariff on to American consumers.

Canadians aren't going to pay these tariffs, although the increased cost of our products will make demand decline and hurt our businesses.

Above all, we cannot go through this struggle with an empty-headed leader who thinks in slogans. You may not like Trudeau and I'm none too fond myself, but at least he got us through the last fight with Trump. I shudder at the idea of Trump-wannabe Poilievre handing the economy over to his Big Daddy.

*READ THE WHOLE POST AND NOT THE SNIPPET SHOWN HERE. ITS OUT OF CONTEXT!* So if you actually read the post, the tariff is the exact same one given years ago to Mexico and Canada. It basically says: "do you part to secure the border and prevent illegals and drugs from coming into the USA, or you will be hit with a 25% tariff." Tariffs have always been a negotiation tool and worked well for Trump in the past. n the past Mexico actually secured it borders and reduced illegal immigration by over 50% and their Tariff went away and Mexico made quite a bit of money doing business with the USA. Canada at the time had Freeland running the show and Canada got screwed. My worry is Trudeau. The request from the USA is not unreasonable, which is secure your border but with Trudeau and his ideology and ego, he would gladly let Canadians eat the 25% Tariff just to look tough.

2012. Pierre Poilievre's Conservatives. More than 1, 100 layoff notices have been handed out by the CBSA.
About 10 per cent of the cuts are in the southern Ontario region, which includes Windsor, Sarnia, Niagara and Fort Erie where, combined, about 100 people will be out of work. The southern region will lose 41 border services agents, 47 employees in the intelligence department and two sniffer dogs teams. McMichael said sniffer dog teams are "a tool that can't be replaced."
"It will make it easier to smuggle contraband into Canada, " McMichael said. Pierre Poilievre was on the Conservative Government that made these cuts to our Border Security. Why would anybody vote for him ? I know I won't. He is a two-facer and a liar. Just out for

We can always join the BRICKS. They would probably pay fair prices for our resources. The US can compete on the world markets for the same resources at higher prices, on shipping alone. Many nations would like trade deals with Canada. We do not need to trade with just the US.

The responsible thing to do is shut the border, we have a generous front door but that too should take into account housing scarcity and economic concerns as well as social cohesion.

Canada needs to find other markets to sell what we currently sell to the US. If we are going to oay 25% more for products from the US we should import from other countries at a higher cost. When cist skyrocket in the US the people will see what they voted for.

Having our border open also hurts Canada and the US.

Are there any Canadian Trump supporters that support his tariff plan?

Maybe this will incentivize Canada to finally do something about the illegal border crossings, immigration and drug problems.

We should’ve closed the border for our own sake long ago. Now we have to be embarrassed.
