The UK has been following the 'Yellow Brick Road' all the way to the cinema this weekend as Disney's Oz The Great and Powerful opened as the clear number one film across the country. Disney's latest hit, heralded by the critics as a "classic", took an Oztastic £3.7 million over a three day weekend leaving this week's other new releases all trailing beneath the £1 million mark.

Across the globe Disney found box office gold at the end of the rainbow as Oz opened worldwide at number one, with estimated returns of $150m. In the US Disney opened the film to a phenomenal $80.3 million - the biggest 2013 debut and third biggest March opener ever. The film, from visionary director Sam Raimi and starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz has been critically acclaimed for its spectacular 3D, with Stylist claiming the film "is possibly the most glorious 3D movie ever made". Metro praised the film's 3D as "sensational" and Daybreak's Aled Jones stated "it is the best 3D film I've ever seen!"

"Oz is the quintessential fairytale and in describing the Land of Oz, we really wanted it to be an explosion of colors and images and sounds that moviegoers had never seen before" says director Sam Raimi on the film's 3D. I love the concept of how the audience will get to experience the film in cinemas. The director explained that during the black and white phase of the film, everything would be in 2D, however the screen would expand and the 3D would be turned on when you enter Oz. This seriously sounds awesome, and I can't wait to experience it.

its like some people here didnt know that this is the story of the wizard, Oz, not the story of dorothy...so its the story before dorothy come to Oz..how the wizard, Oz come to the Oz world...Get it?

James Franco can never do anything wrong.  And Sam Raimi is an amazing director.  Awesome cast, beautiful set design, great back story.  Loved it!

Finally I understand some things of the plot! xD China Girl = The Girl in the circus. The previous assistant who is heartbroken = Theodora. Male assistant/friend = Finley. Annie (in love with Oscar and Dorothy's mother) = Glinda. All the color scenes are the imagination of Oscar, he is "sick" after the cyclone (he doesn't die, he survives) and all that scenes are his memories distorted (or maybe he wanted a life like that). Annie said she didn't still accepted Gale's proposal so maybe she takes care of Oscar but he died later and she decides to accept the proposal or maybe she thinks Oscar died so she accepted it. One way or another, she got married, she is the mother of Dorothy and that's the reason she mentioned Gale.

I like this movie :) Whoever is disappointed that it was not like the because it's NOT about Dorthy duh! It's about the how the Wizard came to be. I love how they put it together, it's a great family film with lots of fun and color :)

I bet some of the comments below say Johnny Depp would've being better than James Franco as Oz because... Well, it gives you the Alice in Wonderland feeling. And who is the character that sticks out the most, is played very well, and wears a hat in Alice in Wonderland ? The Mad Hatter ! And who plays the Mad Hatter ? Johnny Depp ! We're just familiar with Johnny and consider him a great actor. My opinion: Either of them would've being great for Oz
