Insurance companies are the biggest legalised con merchants you can ever get involved in!

They'll happily take your money if you don't question it.

I switch insurance providers every year lol, as a young driver I would still be paying nearly 2 grand if I was loyal. Now, I pay less than £800...

In my 51 years of driving I have only had to make two accident claims and, in each case, the car was parked at the time. Both were fully settled by the third party insurer but, in the case of the mast recent one (August 2018), the insurance claims database was incorrectly updated to show it as my fault. When renewing my wife's insurance, on which I am a named driver, they added an additional premium because I had "falsely stated that the accident was not my fault". My insurer was Aviva at the time and I have been trying to get them to correct this error but so far without success. So, where you have had a no fault claim, you need to make sure that the claims database is correct as the companies will always believe that above your word.

Your broker has not been good. They’ve left you to call the insurance company what on earth have they actually done - other than Act as a post office is all. They’re supposed to be your representative please stop saying they’ve done a good job as it’s a fundamental failure on their part that you even saw the renewal at a 25% load at all. They could and should have resolved this prior to issue.

Shouldn't automatically renew out of loyalty those days are long gone should always shop around.

Thanks for the update, glad she admitted liability.

Always shop around after you've made a claim you'll usually be surprised how little your insurance has gone up ! !

This happened to me after an accident, despite dashcam footage and Police charging the other driver, my premium went from £350 to over £1000, so I actually had to take my car off the road for 3 months until the claim was properly resolved.

My insurance was 65 per month, I reversed into another car, took full responsibility, insurance doubles on my renewal. Been with the company for 10 years. I changed company, now I pay 40 per month.

Someone hit my parked car in December 2019, once it was repaired and I had it back I just assumed that was the whole ordeal over with.
10 months later when I was renewing my insurance I was having a problem where I was getting reasonable quotes but when I gave them further information their quotes would drastically increase, sometimes up to double the price.
I phoned my insurer who couldn't explain it so I tried phoning the company who gave me the lowest renewal quote to see if they could help.
Turns out that my insurer at the time still hadn't closed my claim from 10 months prior and had every single detail about the accident wrong.

Someone hit my parked car but they had me at fault for hitting someone at a junction. And the reason they hadn't closed the claim in 10 months is because they were "struggling to get payment from the other party's insurer"
We were both insured by the same company.

Your synopsis of refund correct. Insurance. Insurance brokers acting sneaky. Should be made illegal. If sell a car distance sale not sell correct paperwork dealer gets screwed but insurance company renewal no mention 25 percent is outrageous. So they get to keep all these loadings that people don’t challenge. What a world we live in.

You are too laid back Ashley. 😀 You were happy to accept a 25% increase! 😮! *ALWAYS* challenge your renewal premiums. Get alternative quotes and then go back to your broker. Even that £35 increase you have absorbed. Too many people are paying over the odds as the companies rely on inertia, increasing the renewal and hoping people will just stump up. Many do. 🙁This applies to anything that is annualy renewed, but especially insurance, car, house, motorcycle, RAC/AA, etc.

After my one and only (not at fault accident) my insurance went up a few months later.... dropped that company ASAP and went somewhere else

My insurance went up after a police officer forgot to put the handbrake on her car causing it to rear end mine. Wasnt even in it at the time! So for 4 years I had to declare a non fault accident on my policies. Turned out I paid an extra £250ish over that time. I was well robbed. They got the bumper replaced but over that time I paid for it. Shocking!!! 2 years after that fault has gone off my record I'm now paying under £300 for the year. The first year after it went off my file I seen a reduction of over £100. From what I remember it went from £446 down to around £339 and last june I paid £296. Its come down loads since it's no longer on file.

insurance in this country is a joke, last year i used a comparison website just to see what increased/decreased prices just to see the differences then a month or so later i chose to actually insure my car with another company and because i previously used the comparison website the company declined my policy a week later saying i completed the forms falsely and on top of that i was blacklisted so every other company i contacted either wouldnt touch me or i had to pay a fortune on top of what id usually be quoted. its a joke anything to get money out of you. i can see why so many people just drive illegally

I had a similar problem a few years ago. What you just said about getting the money back was not explained to me, and they represented it as 'even if it's agreed that you're not at fault, while the claim is open, you pay this extra on renewal'. They wanted me to drop the claim if I wanted the lower renewal price!

Had someone hit my car from behind in a queue of traffic. Other party accepted full blame. (I had a dash cam that showed we were in crawling traffic and I had come to a stop slowly, so claims of me break checking them were thrown out). 7 months later, my renewal came up and they quoted me a 170% increase in premium. (Absolutely NOTHING had changed about my circumstances). They claimed it was "the market rate" and would not go any lower than twice what I had been paying. I politely told them I don't like the piss being taken out of me and told them to cancel the renewal. 10 years of loyal patronage out the window. Found a new policy with a different company that was 20% cheaper than my previous policy.

Insurance companies are con merchants. They will try anything to extract money you shouldn't have to pay.
Friend of mine worked for one of the bigger ones. He explained that the claims dept. has a folder 6 inches thick full of excuses to not pay out for a valid claim. Anything from "act of god" to "First name on policy not capitalised correctly".

I reckon, as it is law to have insurance. It should be made law that you get a guaranteed rebate on your next policy after an incident free year.
