Mountain Bike 3x to 2x Conversion

Zach, the problem with just removing the big chainring is the length of the bolts, they would bottom out before securing the chainring.  You can get shorter bolts that will work for attaching just one ring.  The spacers simply take up the space the big ring used to occupy so the bolts will still get tight.

And what about front shifters? Do you have to replace front shifter from 3 rings to 2 rings?

Thanks and I am going to 2x9 MTN Gearing with 24-38t front Chainrings with Bash Guard and 11-34t cassette 9 speed and later down the line I am going to 12-36t/11-36t or 11-40t/11-42t 9 speed cassette and right I am using 3x9 with my Shimano Deore m590 Crankset with
22-32-42t but I don't use the 42t fully loaded and the 42t hits the rail tracks by crossing 2 sets railroad tracks in San Diego, CA to get to my Stealth Bike Camping spot! and the crossing is not a paved/dirt road

Hi, please have you also changed your left shifter to 2x instead of using the original one which was 3x? Or was it possible to apply any kind of adjustment to the 3x to work as 2x?

Do you have to change the shifter to a 2x shifter or can you keep the old 3x shifter and just set new in/out limits on the derailleur? Thank you

You can only do this with certain cranks. My cranks dont have the 64mm spaced holed drilled and tapped into the crankarm. I only have the 104mm spaced holes.
