Bang on! I would also add that the 1x chains for 11 and 12 speed are thinner and less resilient than 8, 9 or 10 chains. Friction shifting is fantastically simple and robust

If you are having all your touring gear with you, uphills need really low gear, and 1x may have eg. 50t lowest but the narrow chain is in torture.... So 2x is better.

3x with half step gearing and a bail out granny.

I live off a bicycle, Cannondale M900 hardtail. Rohloff hub driven by Sclumpf drive. Means i got a 1x set up with well over 700% spread. 2, 780 days. Keep riding

I have 33 gears to chose from and even gears so low that I can't start on a flat road! But going up an absurd hill, with a felt risk of falling backwards, they are fine!

I'm a 3x7-9 kinda guy with -- absolutely -- friction shifter.

Front triple is best, because it offers 3 chainrings and a low and high gears plus ones in between. Chain and cassette 8 spped are best, because there is for example the cassette 11-40 teeth, the chain is wide enough, lasts long and has reasonable price.
What is with the bicycle you show? The one you rode the most, right? Is it still in use?
Friction shifters are best. If rear derailleur is bend, you usually can shift. And also: It lasts long.

I absolutely agree!
And for everyday, easy trails, or roads, go SINGLE SPEED 😊

I go 1x for enduro. I dont ride roads on a bicycle but i can see why it's an issue for the chain. The stretching on a 30km trail is nothing over time when compared to road riding which can be about 100km per ride. Over time, that stretch gonna be wild. My chains on the mtb normally lasts about 1.5 to 2 years

"Shimano Deore XT CS-LG600-11 (11-50)" one 42 blade in front and everything is good. it is cheap and works well on a touring-bike...

1X drive is amazing, simple, reliable, easy to use and has enough ratio for touring

Best use a rohloff or Pinion drive system for a touring bike
