Learn how to covert your mountain bike drivetrain to a 1x setup for under $100. I am showing this on a Trek Marlin 7 but this can be done on many models. Your bike will ride quieter, be lighter, and be more reliable.

I have a Marlin 5 and this was the perfect video for me, Ive been looking everywhere to avoid paying $500+ for complete new drivetrain and all the other components required to accomodate it. Thanks for the pro tip!

you are a genius!! i have an older bike with a 3x9 and converting to a complete modern 1x system would cost more than the whole bike is worth, this is the perfect alternative.

Bucklos has a better square taper crankset that comes with your choice of circle or oval narrow wide chain ring for less than 60.

Thanks for the idea. I just did something similar with my older Marlin 7 using the crank with bolted on ring from an older Trek hardtail with a square taper bottom bracket. That’s all you really need but the stock rings are prone to dropping the chain though. I purchased a narrow-wide 32t ring to replace them on mine. The rear derailleur still lacks a clutch but chain drops are greatly diminished.

YES ... but now I have a bike with no bottom end gearing nor high end gearing. I assumed this would cover putting on a "mega-range" cassette no?
What reasons are there for ditching my high and low gears for this setup. It's basically now a $100 budget bike setup.

Currently got the square taper action cranks from ebay paired with a 36t snail chainring, its brilliant but because the bike is only 6 speed (from mech, cranks and bb were destroyed previously due to no maintenance over 6 years and damage) so had to go budget parts, its very low gearing even with a 36t but its brilliant makes the bike even lower maintenance ahah

Great video! You should definitely have more subs!

You could just buy square taper crank arms 104bcd like action brand for 50 bucks total with single chainring.

i suggest using deore fc-m 5100-1 for 50€ and bottom bracket SM-BB52 for 10€. gives you more quality and less weight and its also below 100€ or 100$

What's the largest toothed single ring you all use along with usual riding type you do? Go! Oh and what rear drivetrain you running..

Great vid, thanks for sharing! Looking to do this to my Marlin 7, but that part number seems to be out of stock everywhere. Perhaps discontinued? Or just very popular? Do you by chance have a link to where you got yours? Thanks again!

I live in Florida also. I have a 2021 trek dual sport 2. It has a 3x. 48/38/38 and 8 speed 11/32 cassette. Can i use this crankset with a 46t ring since i mainly ride paved roads. Will i have to get a shorter spline botton bracket for good alignment ?? Or do you think going 2x. With 46/36 is better? Some one said i would have to change my cassette if i go 1x but you didn't 🤔.

Hello. I want to do something like that to my second bike. Do you know if I can use a chainring (11 or 12 speed for example Sram Eagle) with 7 speed chain???? Is there any problem the chainring to be for more gears (so thinner chains🤓). Thanks in advance!

Silly mod. You need a bigger cassset at the back else you loses 2/3 of the gear ratio’s.

Hey man awesome video. What type of raceface chainring does this work with?

I think GIANT makes the Trek frames. Does Trek do the paint? If so, damn that looks dope.
